Neither do I, I feel more like smoking... /sex joke
Either way, they have some generally depressing stuff, but the compilations and Unknown Pleasures are less gloomy then Closer is.

What's more gloomy is seeing photographs of you.

Hell, this album is depressing. Good but depressing as fucking hell. I heard somewhere that Joy Division influenced a lot of goth bands. While I personally haven't heard much goth, I think this is quite plausible since they were so fucking gloomy. Can anyone confirm is or is it BS?

Well goth isn't really a genre, soooo I'd say no. However they have influenced a lot of gloomy indie bands like Editors and Interpol.

But keep in mind they don't really sound alike. They influenced mostly post punk eighties groups, like Section 25 and New Order, which along the lines influenced the likes of Interpol and Editors, maybe even in pseudo-goth like Marylin Manson's electronic side. This Message Edited On 12.26.06

In a way, I am thankful that Curtis offed himself. There may have never been the superior New Order if he didn't.
This is still a strong moody record. Though, Curtis's sad sucker shtick can get on my nerves.

He doesn't really talk in the first person except on The Eternal. When I think of sad sucker shtick, I envision a singer-songwriter waxing on how awful his life is.

Good review but you missed on mentioning the dancey song Isolation and I feel suicide was mentioned WAY too much in the review.
I think this is their masterpiece but so many bands ape unknown pleasures because it is using word sparingly more "commercial" of the two.
From what I have read on the band Ian Curtis could be a funny guy. They were not all doom and gloom.
There is a clip from Still where after they play "sister ray" Curtis says "now for our version of Louie Louie"
ok so its not stand up but makes me laugh

Well, Ian Curtis did kill himself after recording this album, so I think his impending suicide played a big part in the atmosphere of this album.

even if he didnt kill himself, this album would still kick ass

Very informative review. Well done and thanx. I just purchased the re-master 2cd "collectors edition" from Oct, 2007. How good is the sound quality on this?

Joy Division are one of those bands that have been recommended to me countless times...After watching the movie 'Control' about Joy Division and mainly about Ian Curtis' life since high school I think I'll finally listen to them. The movie is excellent btw.

You definitley should.
And ya what I've seen of that movie is good, need to watch it the whole way through though.
