lowered my rating because everything after Snow is pointless. should have ended with that song i can see why it was originally an EP.

I really don't get the praise for this album (not here, but on other blogs/websites). This is just post-rock by the numbers....

i wouldn't even say this is post-rock by the numbers, it's shitty 'inspirational' commercial music
|

dont know why you bothered to listen to this to be honest noctus. you were obviously not going to like it. i question if you actually did bother to sit through the whole thing.

i agree though it is hard to call this post-rock and not "music to hypothetical adverts for sony cameras". it does inspire me and make me feel uplifted which is why i like to listen to it. but the debut had more songs that i "felt". like i said before, everything after Snow is a waste of time to me.

Post Rock by the numbers can be amazing. This is not amazing

nice dig js19. the second track on that caspian EP is incredible. the vocals are terrible but the music is some of the best they've done.

I think the first three original tracks are all amazing. Don't care about the rest much but yeah, actually starting to enjoy a lot of Waking Season too

i did listen to the whole thing
i'm a masochist
also if i may ask, it's your rating of course but if over half the album is a waste of time how on earth does it warrant a positive score? 3 means good

According to this site's standards, which mean less than jack shit

5 songs i really enjoy is pretty good going, and the rest arent terrible, just pointless.

This review is what made me a little confused about the reception of this album.

there are certain circles of people on the internet. people on this website scrutinize lack of originality and experimentation a lot more than most communities. reddit and blogs are more forgiving, where sputnik and professional critics are harsher.

yeah basically that
I honestly don't care as much about originality, as long as the music is good. not quite buying the sincerity arguments either (yeah, this is super-polished, but that doesn't mean it can't be from the heart - at least when you look at the attitude Franzen goes into recording his music). I understand the arguments against this, but at the same time I think there's an argument for inspirational stuff as long as it's as well-done as it is here.
the biggest concern I have is where he goes from here: as some commenters have mentioned, he's a bit limited in compositional style because he was self-taught, and though it still works really well for me I can see it getting old fast.

he's a bit limited in compositional style because he was self-taught,
yeah as a musician who is entirely self-taught who has no less than 5 projects with releases out, all REALLY different, let me tell you this is not a worthy excuse whatsoever
and i also have more projects of unreleased stuff as well, all different
maybe i'm seeing more (aka less) in this because i'm a musician, i don't know. on a consumer level this might be fine but when scrutinized on musician levels this is dime-a-dozen shit. he isn't limited in composition - he's just making the same shit over and over again because of how easy it is. how do you think he managed 2 records so fast and expanded it to an album with relative ease?
it's all about perception i suppose. you see inspiration, i see bullshit. i mean if you enjoy it then yeah, whatever, perhaps i'm just cynical.

Noctus, I think when you're self taught, it's so easy just to stick to easy structures and chords because you get payoff without much difficulty. You;re not slaving away trying different things and scrapping whole songs because if you write everything on an easy structure with the same chords and put twinkles of the top it sounds nice straight away.
No work, some payoff. Doesn't make this good, but I can see why you;d get stuck in the rut

Man, i really can't stand this stuff. When you realize that basically every song on here has the exact identical chord progression along with the obligatory hollow climax, you really start losing faith in this dude. He isn't even trying, and the world loves him for it

I'm a terrible person and this pseudo-inspirational crap makes me happy.

this is the source of all of my frustration with this awful, awful project
i mean if you listen and enjoy then okay, whatever, but think about what you're contributing money to if you pay this dude
