Decent first review, but it's overwritten as fuck. I'm pretty sure you could have described an album like this in much fewer than a bajillion paragraphs, even if you are giving it a perfect score. Regardless, that's not the worst problem to have for a first review.
Album rules but it's a bit early to be calling it a 5 for an album that doesn't really innovate other than being a really good listen

@Paradox
Appreciate the constuctive criticism mate. Obviously I was already well aware that this was an extremely longwinded & extravagant review - I'm not quite that narcissistic - but hey it was my first, I was baked as a brownie, & well brevity isn't exactly my strong point when it comes to what I'm passionate about.
I agree that it doesn't really innovate in terms of bringing completely new elements to the table. But they did expand on the existing ones to a considerable extent. I don't really see why albums should have to be innovative as a strict measure of progression. I don't use the criteria of innovation to assess how good music is. Good music is always good music for me. Wonderful if it also happens to be an entirely new pioneering style with universal acclaim. But I don't really care if it doesn't transcend genres or the meaning of life itself; at the end of the day, it just needs to hit me where it matters most.
I'm not embarrassed about the music I enjoy - if it's something I genuinely appreciate or love, then nothing else is a factor. If it's been done a thousand times before, but it's done well, & more importantly I actually like it - then a lack of innovation is entirely irrelevant.
They were already a brilliant & somewhat innovative band for me in the first place, in that they possess some of the most sublime melodic sensibilities in modern metal, along with a general style that I really dig. & as I've outlined in my review - I feel that they took that sound & everything they had on Impulse & furthered & developed those elements into a more cohesive, accomplished & overall impressive release.
I'd have to imagine it's a somewhat similar paralleled situation to your 5 rating of Periphery II - in that I personally don't believe they did anything particularly innovative on that album - but I can understand if you gave it a 5 because you already really enjoyed the band's sound on their debut & thought it was a significant enough augmentation/enhancement to display a marked improvement.
But yeah...that's just my view on things...

Oh yeah, music doesn't have to be innovative to be good, and I have Impulse 5'd; I think Erra is probably the best metalcore band of this decade (formed this decade I mean). This just isn't there yet for me =p
I totally fanboy 5'd P2, by the way. It has loads of obvious flaws but I don't care because I enjoy it so much and I think it's very important for the genre in general

Fair enough man. I love Impulse too - to the extent of a 4.5 - but this release has just taken it up a notch & I haven't stopped listening to it since it leaked. Thing is, I obviously anticipated to like this long before it came out - but it still managed to exceed my expectations, most of all in how consistently awesome the tracks are.
I really like the atmosphere & feel they create & maintain throughout the album, despite possessing what most would call relatively generic elements, the way in which they have combined & executed them is distinct to the band & like you said, they're really at the top of the metalcore heap at the moment. I'm still discovering new favourite moments & nuances with every listen - so who knows dude, maybe it'll all click for you someday :]
& yer I guess most of my 5's are by nature influenced by my fanboyism to a degree too, which is how it should be. I wouldn't have 5'd them if I didn't inexplicably enjoy them beyond all rational logic & reason - I suppose that's what true love is really. But just cuz an album has flaws doesn't mean it's strengths can't compensate for that. I don't subscribe to the idea of the 'picture perfect album', that's not what constitutes a 5 in my perspective; it's purely about the impact it has on me above all else.
Nothing's truly perfect in this world - & it's all the more wonderous & beautiful for it.
& they do indeed BeefPudding. Jesse is one of the best guitarists around at the moment in my opinion.

"In the conception of Augment, ERRA have truly transcended all expectations & standards with a phenomenally composed album consisting of ferocious screams, soaring cleans, massive riffs, sensational leads, plenty of feeling - & a distinct sense of self-awareness & honesty throughout. This is without any shadow of a doubt one of the most consistently brilliant records I have ever had the pleasure of listening to."
Dear god.
