Yeah I can see where you're coming from, but I think in AJJ's case the honesty and self-awareness

does overcompensate for whatever else they're lacking in. Still a great album, though I probably

prefer Can't Maintain and Knife Man a bit more. Seeing them with joyce manor last year was one of the

most fun times I've had at a show.

re: iluvatar

nah wavves pretty much sucks. lewis's review is super good for his album 'king of the beach', one of my favorites from sputnik.

but otherwise, i was pretty much ready to make an account any day, this review just gave me a little forward push i guess. really the thing that worked me up about this review is that these criticisms are, to quite a degree, what i'd expect to come from someone whose musical experience in no way prepares them to appreciate ajj.

let me elaborate, because im sure that last part sounds elitist and gay
robertsona pointed out nicely in his last review (that afro-folk album or something) that the farther 'out' an album is, the more context you tend to need to appreciate it in its own right. being that these criticisms might be what id write if i was trying to think of what a high school student reared on, say, lana del rey or mcr might characterize ajj as, it seems that iluvatar really doesnt have the musical framework to appreciate the album.

which, really, i find hella strange. i mean, ive thought for the longest time that these (ajj's discog) were some of the most accessible internet-esoteric pieces out there.

I just mean how difficult can it possibly be to "get" folk-punk... conceptually?
