Guys, why are you bothering to talk about the studio Dead, the only Dead is live Dead, yes they have some good studio albums, this is not one of them. If you want to listen to the Dead, try anything from the Dick's picks, Dave's Picks, or Road Trips Series; within the years 68-71, 73-78, 85, 89-91. To get started, Check out my review of Dick's Pick 22, Kings Beach Bowl "68"

there are so many great Dick's to choose from as well as other live dead and bootlegs, but i have to beg to differ with your take on their studio releases and that this is not a good one.....

Titan, the band embarrassed by how bad this release was, it does have some live staples in it. Ok, Viola Lee Blues is good, but I'll take any other live version I have heard, as they themselves said, this is the Dead on speed, and it came out terrible, which is why they took so much time to make Anthem the way they wanted.
| | | This album has a certain charm to it. I prefer all three of their 60's studio albums to any of their other studio material.

@wham
not necessarily disagreeing with your preference of live dead.....regardless of how the band may have felt about this release, i grew up with this bad boy and agree with JT (rare, yes i know) that this has a charm to it
you can certainly find better renditions of their studio tunes throughout their live collections but I still enjoy the studio versions as well, especially when i'm looking for perfection from a production standpoint......after all, they are a jam band.....only had the opportunity to see them once

The Grateful Dead were an entirely different beast live just like The Who, as far as I'm concerned. That being said they do have their fair share of great albums and this is one of them. But extended jamming is were they excelled.

Saw there last live show in Chicago and the first reunion at Alpine Valley just west of Kenosha, Wisconsin. I do like some studio, but as Jerry says, they only made studio albums because they had to, they felt uncomfortable with the restrictions in the studio, but many of them are good, Anthem, Workingman's, Beauty, Wake of the Flood, Mars, Blues for Allah, Terrapin. Garcia and Ace for the solo stuff
Totally understand sentimentality, I never heard it till after I was into them for a few years, and the stark difference from that to everything else they did just took me off guard, I guess
By the way I have the first pressing of this on the gold print label, I guess for that it is cool

if you have a link for a live version for Terrapin Station that is better than the studio, please share it.......my favorite Dead tune

Manosg, are we on every thread together. Apparently we have the same wide ranging great taste in music.
As Jerry said, there are only 2 kinds of music; good music and everything else

haha indeed! This page is full of users with great taste.

I do not have a link, however the Dozin' at the Knick version is good, a full Terrapin, and the version from Chapel Hill "92"are 2 of my favorites
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
i'll try to find them and check em out

correction, the Chapel Hill Terrapin is "93" on a boot called "Another Day in the Sunshine", It seems like all the great Terrapins are in the 90's although, they did play some in "77" and "78"

hi wham : ) i agree with most of your thoughts on their studio stuff, they have a few gems though. with that being said, i almost always listen to live sets

me too, Unless I am listening to vinyl, then I kick back with a nice clean copy of Amer. B, Workingman's, Wake, or Blues for Allah

No, this is not the dead I know, to sped up, they didn't really like it, the shows from around this period, late 67, give a better rep. of who they were then, do have a clean copy of it though, the first pressing gold label, wasted on me, and have everything else, for the most part.

idk wham i think this is a better release (studio recording an all) than a 2.5 but i get your complaints that it wasn't really accurate of their true sound during those years. if you heard this and didn't know it was the Dead at first i think 2.5 would be a bit harsh. still fun, if not a bit standard psych / blues rock
| | | is this the debut / begins with "golden road (to something something)" or whatever it's called
that song rocks
