@GiaNXGX I think we can all agree that Nine Inch Nails is the most popular name to ever be associated

with the term "industrial" in a general sense, that's what I was getting at.

And yeah I do realize that. That's why I've been trying to make my most recent reviews as short and to

the point as I can. I just really wanted to personally write an essay on this one. I don't care if

it's not necessary or pointless, this was a special occasion for me, it's my 100th review. For the

occasion, I wanted to talk A LOT about an album I had a lot to say about and have had a lot to say

about for quite some time. I wanted to make this an essay, I didn't think it would be this long of an

essay, but I wanted to make this lengthy so that I cover everything I wanted to mention.

I chose this one because it was actually the first album ever where I really felt like I was completely alone in my opinion lol.

you're not alone breaking. even reznor himself said in an interview with kerrang that this was his least favorite album as well and it didn't sell well compared to his other endeavors

Nah, this is completely sincere. If I wanted to get a reaction, I'd have chosen something like JT's new album and given it a 2 or something. Like I said, Nine Inch Nails was one of my favorite bands while I was growing up, and this was one of the first experiences I had with genuine disappointment from a band I loved, but not just disappointment, the first case I encountered where everyone was telling me it was great, and I really just wasn't liking it at all lol.

Strongly disagree with this review. The album doesn't meander at all but rather has a very distinctive, layered narrative if you follow along. The recurring musical themes through many songs, the perfect pairing of organic instruments and electronics with David Carson's accompanying visuals of digitized nature, the cathartic buildups and releases.... A 1.5 is ridiculous. The beginning is well written but I think you lose a sense of professionalism towards the end.

Hmmm, 1/5? Also, I love how you act like The Downward Spiral had such deep, thoughtful lyrics. Everyone, including NIN fans, knows that Reznor's lyrics kinda suck hard. Honestly, they didn't get good until Year Zero and even then you have goofy shit like "The Great Destroyer". He is over the top and cheesy and thankfully, his vocal delivery is energetic and pure enough that you learn over time not to care that "god money, i'll do anything for you" is kinda dumb.

What sells this album for those of us who think it is the best thing he has done is that is doesn't actually feel try hard and dishonest. It actually feels more genuine than TDS given that the former is essentially the epitome of him trying to sound dark and cool. Why else do you think that the stalkery/creepy song off that album is the "sexy", best known single by him?

@conesmoke What is it about "Pilgrimage" that grinds you up so much?

in particular, that heinous shouting in the background mixed with that awful melody (which always reminds me of some colossal arena before a battle takes place...) The industrial components are alright.

I can see what you mean. It is one of my faves, but if the melody doesn't get you then the song is pretty pointless.
