Pretty good this, much better than expected like most people have said. His vocals seem a fair bit better than on the "Johnny Marr and the Healers" album from a few years back.

Need to hear this, even if he does rate Sport far too highly.

Ah. I'm really not a fan of such short reviews. It works well on allmusic.com, but I think (or I want to think) Sputnik doesn't really aim at such write-ups. In other words, I'd be really disappointed if every review looked like that. Keep them at least two paragraphs long. Once again, this is a sound-off.

I don't think that assertion makes any sense at all greg. Short reviews look completely fine to me on any website. Most music reviewing sites actually have much shorter reviews than the more fleshed out ones found on Sputnik. Honestly, from a reader's standpoint, I find that I prefer shorter reviews over drawn out essays. Something that gets to the point, is straight forward, and just gives a quick overview of what the album sounds like and what's good and bad about it, are much more accessible and easier to pick up for the casual reader anyway.

And I'd argue with you saying that this length isn't Sputnik's standard as well. I mean, just look at Sobhi's reviews. I know I use him as a example a lot, but that's only because he really is the best example of a writer who is very talented in being very informative and descriptive in very few words. Telling readers what needs to be known without beating around the bush.

Yeah, it might seem out of place with all these other more lengthy reviews, but it still works very well for its own purposes. I'm not saying that this review is Sobhi level, and I'm not trying to defend it when I say all this, (as I only think this is an okay review) I'm just arguing your point in general. Also, soundoffs in my mind, should typically just be a few sentences. And while I don't think I was informative and detailed enough in this particular review, if you're a great writer like Sobhi, you can manage making only one paragraph be more than substantial, while being more direct in your points.

I really like the review man and I know exactly where you going with it but then again I've heard the album 10-15 times

like I get that people are commenting on its relative brevity because the average review length on this site is longer but you said plenty to give a good indication of the sound

it's not really an album that requires in depth analysis imo, just a good rockin bunch of tunes with fantastic guitar

my only gripe is that you skipped over the greatness of new town velocity :[

Thanks man, it's good to know you think I did a good job. I pretty much just said all that I had to say about it. And yeah, I'm really regretting not mentioning New Town Velocity, it's more than worthy of it.

look at that review i can barely see it!

good work though, alex. just a couple (nitpicky) things:

After spending his post-Smiths time as a member of bands such as Modest Mouse, The The, and Electronic, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr

remove 'former Smiths' because it's redundant.

The Messenger is clearly identifiable as an album that’s atmosphere lives in the ‘90s,

would definitely replace 'that's' with 'whose'.

How short can a review be?

Where do we draw the line???

i would neg if i could. a quarter of the entire review is one single run-on sentence. you also managed to use two semicolons in a six-sentence review, neither of them correctly.

the length is fine though.

I think this is too short, honestly. I think this could be easily expanded for the better. As it stands it looks like a huge paragraph that could, at least, be manipulated into two for visuals' sake. I guess I also just feel like there's more that you could say about this.

This is probably gonna be the shortest review I'll ever write. This is pretty much all I felt I needed to say about this.
