This is the debut without the atmosphere (which is half the band, imo) and more Jamie xx.

someguest - it merits a listen because their new direction has some good points. it just will never deliver to me the way their debut did.

Name me a band that sounds anything like this, and name me an indie group that has merged the sounds of future garage, ambience, soul into one culminating idea. You can't.

Not as good as debut but not bad by any stretch.

Sounds like dance songs you could hear in every club in the 90's, except they've been slowed down 10 times

Uhm, James Blake dropped an album AND an EP full of that stuff, just last year.

Hasn't this been the shtick of the past 3 to 4 years?

damn this was a pretty big let down. the first track is really really good but I barely remember what the rest sounded like. it all blurred together but not in a good way. still a nice listen but I expected more from The xx.

Not to butt heads or anything, but the terminology people are using to describe this album is too vague to do Coexist justice. Consider the song "Try", beginning with a melody vaguely reminiscent of police sirens before transforming into a slow, sonorous ballad held together by bittersweet chords and a beat that slowly unfolds its distant claps into the space surrounding them. Or how about "Sunset", with a heartbroken chorus that only starts "banging" like a garage track about halfway through with just the precise amount of sub-bass? Or what about the cinematic funk of "Tides"? Or the beautifully layered steel drums in "Reunion"? Or the understated house of "Swept Away", with muffled, hissing hi-hats, sharply compressed kicks, and some stellar guitar phrases over pained piano chords? I mean, I'm not a fantastic writer or anything, but there is simply so much detail to sift through. Saying, "Yep, it's boring compared to their last album," seems lazy to me. I don't know, I must be the only one hearing all of this beauty pouring out from one place. I love this album.

Problem is, when you review like that it gives the impression that you have thesaurus.com as your homepage.
It doesn't make good reading.

it's actually more atmospheric. the beats contribute heavily to that. as does the fact that it functions more strongly as one work rather than a sequence of tracks.

Like I said, I'm not a good writer. I did use those words correctly and I'm being honest, so what's the problem?

There is no problem, I was merely pointing out that it can be difficult to vent your feelings in a review whilst still making it an easy and enjoyable read. Probably explains the 'vague' terminology.
For what it's worth I mostly agree with you. I really don't understand the negative reactions towards this, and I often wonder whether I'm listening to the same record.
