I don't really understand the negative reactions, actually. It's not their best, but I don't think it's their worst either. It's exactly what I was expecting; basically the same formula of every Ensiferum album minus the last track, which is awesome. I don't know what to rate this yet. It's not amazing, but it's still fun and has some epic sections.

I don't get the hate this album is getting, sure it wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be, but it definitely wasn't bad either.

there is no hate, there's just an average to about a slightly positive reception. Besides that there is no way in hell that the album is great.

yeah, it doesnt suck, its just pretty damn boring. the riffs sound uninspired and theres only one fast song on the whole album.

It's sad how they just dropped the quality they had going on previous albums on this one. Hopefully better luck next time.

The songwriting, for what may be the first time in Ensiferum’s career, is almost entirely absent.
I watched an interview where the guitarist and the bassist talked about this album and they did say they took a different approach to songwriting this time around. They said that as opposed to what had become the norm for them, they cut back on jamming everything together (riffs, choirs, supplemental instruments, folk elements etc.) and gave every section and instrument their own time and space. This should clear up some of your confusion about why Ensiferum are experimenting with things they shouldn't be experimenting with in the first place and why this record sounds "different" haha.

I haven't heard the album myself though. I planned to be the first to hear this and write about it, but instead I spent the last week chilling with my girl at the other end of the country. Yeah, can't say I'm sad I passed up on my initial plans haha. Anyway, great review Kyle, very detailed. I just hope I won't feel the same way because I haven't heard a bad Ensiferum album yet and I definitely don't want that trend to end with this album!

The trend of A quality albums ended with Iron. Victory Songs still had glimpses of the "Ensiferum touch" but was overall a

downgrade in quality. From Afar took symphonic approach and was by far the most daring record the band had put it out

at the time, but it was a relatively strong album.

Unsung Heroes is the first album with a couple of memorable tracks surrounded completely by duds, whereas the

opposite was true for their previous albums.

This makes a lot of sense, wish I had seen that interview before. Still, though, that approach did not work at all.

Yup, of course it makes sense to critique it if it doesn't work. I just wanted to share a little back story with you.

jee, I wish i saw that interview too.... it sure as hell clears up things a bit more so than you might realize. I just hope they go back to their original sound.
