It's so shocking honestly because like Chronic Town-New Adventures in Hi-Fi all have multiple bangers and are relatively consistent 3.5s-5.0s
Did losing Bill Berry really hurt that band that much?

i mean i dont think so lol i think up is one of their most creative personally

They're trying a lot of ideas on Up, but I don't like most of the ideas, but yeah creative still
Reveal isn't creative at all like 8/12 of these songs are like the same song

i think i can kinda look past that since the melodies and production are great and it's an album that knows and owns what it is pretty well, but is not gonna be the bag of every r.e.m. fan

At the time this sounded like the band revitalised, some renewed vigour with some lovely tunes.
Now. Shite.

I was sure I 2’d this at some point, but now it’s time to give it another try.
Is there a consensus on which post-New Adventures…. REM is the best? I remember Accelerate being a refreshing one, but also that it remained shallow underneath its cool-looking waves.

ive always thought up was the best one post new adventures but i like accelerate a lot too

I loved accelerate when it came out but it was very throwaway.
As a result of this being bumped I’ve stuck it on. The Lifting is a great song. Very early 2000s.

@gabba I would rec 'Around the Sun' mate. 'Accelerate' is also cool.

The album starts surprisingly strong, with lots of familiar tunes I forgot about. It drags towards the middle, and even "Imitation of Life" didn't do much to me despite being an MTV hit I rather liked back in the days (maybe works only with the video?). But "I'll Take the Rain" is fantastic, suits very well the shite life period I'm in atm.

Imitation of Life is a classic excuse you

lol sans the lifting i generally prefer side b. think saturn return is mostly where things start to pick up and sans beachball its smooth sailing for me. fascinating really shoulda closed this
not that i dont like some of the side a stuff it just blends and blurs a lil

I found side A to be catchier, maybe that's why I preferred it (but damn "I'll Take the Rain" is so good).
@Pho3nix I checked "Around the Sun", but it was very flat at first listen. I guess it's one of those sneaky growers.

yeah thats fair. sans imitation i think they throw most of the catchier stuff in the opening stretch. i j lean towards the more textural side of this bih
i do not like around the sun at all lol. only r.e.m. i get nothin out of
