Is this actually any good? I've seen them live and they blew balls, didn't particularly like much of
their older stuff but the review makes it sound as though this may be a bit different.

well, back in the day before I started listening to stuff that actually had riffs I used to listen to AS so I kind of have a soft spot for them but I get the hate. I thought you were trolling at first. They do tune unnecessarily low and I think it's cuz they are extremely aware that people only listen to their music to mosh. They've been putting out the same record ever since ...And Life Is Very Long. I always sort of lumped Whitechapel with SS and all the other mediocore bands. After listening to this a couple of times, it's definitely grown off of me a bit. They still tend to sacrifice technicality for juns which is my main complaint. I love it when bands get all noodley so this type of shit is getting old for me but I still found it to be a fairly entertaining listen for what it is, which is a small step up from mediocore

It's worth noting, somewhat. I mean, seriously, are we all not just a few breakdowns away from karate kicking and epileptic seizures? I know the first time I hear a chugging pattern, all I can think of is punching grannies in the face and possibly showing off my sweet cartwheel/backflip skills. Breakdowns are lifes way of saying that it's ok to punch things and move erratically as long as you're moshing, and it all comes down to who really conveys that message to the masses the best.
