the pitchfork review of this is pretty spot on I just like this more, I think... I love how they point out its flaw for much of the review and then still rate it rather highly (7.1)

A 7.1 leaves plenty of room to address whatever faults the reviewer may have with the album (if we're really going to get into the fine art of pulling apart ratings)

Plus Pitchfork seem to operate via some form of voting system, whereby the reviewer is free to say what he/she wants about the album (I love it/I hate it) but the rating ends up reflecting the staff as a whole

Yeah I think that that's generally the case (7.1 leaves plenty of room for weakness-identifying) it's just that I've always thought that when Pitchfork rates anything 7ish or higher it's all praise-praise-praise.
But yeah I've heard about the voting system, too.

I just spent some time with this album, and it seems like he's really grown as a musician these past two years. I mean, how long did everyone think he'd just be playing acoustic sets? It's good to branch out, and the increased instrumentation he's put into the songs only adds to the atmosphere he's been creating since his debut. And on top of that, the vocals sound less strained and forced. Color me impressed.

Pitchfork logic:

"Oh, it's not lo-fi indie music? It must be pretty terrible, then."

no actually that's not pitchfork logic at all but good try
