I love how forward Matt's voice is in the mix. You understand every word he says. In terms of storytelling alone this blows the rest of The National's discography out of the water

Well I know that you know

that you've become the target of this hand

This sounds like a narrator in some western or something, haha

It Never Happened, Sugar Wife and Trophy Wife are kinda boring, but the rest are either solid or

great

My favorite is Fashion Coat

The production on this record is perfect. Kind of funny that it's better produced than any of their more musically polished ones

All but the self titled have perfect production imo.

Alligator's too fuzzy

Boxer's really well rounded but less intimate than this

High Violet is crazy overproduced

TWFM is less so but it's a bit too live

The album doesn't really have any bad songs, but feels a little less consistent in terms of atmosphere and theme than I'd like.

And for me, it doesn't really have a single perfect tune, unlike Alligator's Geese, Boxer's Fake Empire, High Violet's Little Faith, or Trouble's Hard To Find. (Though I know I'm alone at that last one.)

Still, a great album and a must have for any National fan.

It's one of the best ones on the album imo. Worst is probably Pink Rabbits
