I don't necessarily hate this album but I think it deserves a 2. From a subjective stand point it can be pretty fun at times.

I bought this and only got through 4 tracks before I turned it off. It's probably because that million dollar recording sounds like complete garbage and most of the album is just really fast 1 note chugging with sweeping leads and pinch squeals over it. I honestly even find the shredding to be ineffective and boring. I can understand why people like this album but it does nothing for me, the songwriting is terrible imo.

^Agreed. I can completely understand why someone would like this. However it spits in the face of music integrity.

well written review mate, don't know if i can see all your points though. I didn't this album to be overall bad, but definitely not as polarising as some others see it

Correct me if I'm wrong but:
The production on this album is very slick and polished sounding, although [b]it is[b/] not as heavily produced as some similar acts such as Periphery[b]. Unfortunately[b/] the million dollar makeover actually proves to drag the album down.
No biggies, just helping out slightly. The actually and really kind of sound choppy when used so close together in one sentence. Love the metaphor usage.

definitely agree that parts of this are "awkward", and also agree that the production is sometimes strange, to the point of being a distraction. but there's still a lot of things about this that i love.
|
| |
also there are like 2 or 3 filler tracks and they're all in the second half of the album.

I can totally see why others hate this but this album is fun as hell to me. My one gripe, which a lot of others seem to share, is the length. Most fans of their older stuff have said their albums were too short and I think they took it to heart with this release. They overdid the length and some of the songs come off as filler because of it. When your style is so precise and people know what to expect, it usually safer to come out with short releases. With short releases you can eliminate the filler and the listener only has to focus on your best songs instead of having to search through filler to find them. I still think this is a huge step forward, though. I mean, it was still technical and fun and the vocals have improved a lot from A Higher Place.

I don't get why people call this deathcore: it doesn't really have any conventional chugs, none of the 'surfy riffs' nor does it have a single death growl more like progressive metalcore.

Their older stuff was more deathcore, so I guess it just stuck with them.
