On his first 2 albums he doesn't know who he is and the results are either competent but without vision (Car) or an utter failure (Scratch).

On the next 2 he finally finds his own voice, fusing electronic and world music ("Biko", "Intruder", "The Rhythm of the Heat", "San Jacinto" etc.), but many songs are so full of cheesy 80's synths, beats and production that it's hard to treat them seriously ("I Don't Remember", "Shock the Mokey etc.). I'd still advise to listen to one of them sooner or later (preferably the more self-confident 4) - but not necessarily "sooner".

On So his melodies and sound have somewhat matured (well, as long as we forget about "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time"), but at the same time his songwriting got flattened and predictable. Us and Up are going further that road - more and more sophisticated arrangements and less and less engaging songs. Gabriel successfully absorbs and melds other artists' styles, but he's not interesting anymore.

As for the soundtracks, Birdy is good but hardly anything more than an instrumental version of Security, OVO has high higs and low lows and Long Walk Home is rather average, especially if you know Passion, the one work that truly makes Gabriel special.

His album covers are mostly awesome though.
