I still have this as my 2nd fave after the obvious #1.
All their first 4 + EP rule hard though, so it matters little.

MASTERRRR OF NATIONS REVEAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL

Geoff Tate was at his absolute prime here regarding vocal ability, and the Live in Tokyo contains an otherworldly live vocal performance.

The vocal performance is so overwhelming here it's ridiculous. Even as a high baritone, Tate hit notes that rival those of USPM contemporaries like John Arch, Midnight, and The Tyrant, who are all standard tenors. The whole album is fairly overlooked in the power and prog scene alike, and can compete with, if not outmatch Helloween's Keeper albums as the better power metal album.

This is hardly a power metal album.

It does take plenty of influences of NWOBHM and mixes them with speed metal while increasing the ridiculously soaring vocals, and the songwriting at so many points rivals anything off the Keepers.

Rage and Mindcrime are better than it, but I don't like the more accessible direction of Empire quite as much as the first three. It's still a great album nonetheless.

Yeah, and he only came back to help on a few songs later on. This is much better than Empire imo, that one's overrated
