they are bad but more interesting than this lot, who managed to scrape together 3 good songs and one potentially fantastic demo album

i think they had more good ones, but i do agree that they didn't necessarily live up to their own potential which sucks

Digging into this recently. Kind of a mixed bag but the highs are damn great. "Winona" is the best song Yo La Tengo never wrote.

finally!!! i remember waiting for you to get to this album on your old shoegaze list.

It's def not perfect but the highs are some of my fav gaze tracks. 't/t', 'winona', 'kick the tragedy', & 'what happened' specifically

Yeah t/t, Winona, and Tragedy are amazing (though Tragedy could probably lose a couple minutes of that intro but it’s blissful enough that it doesn’t bother me). I also love “Angel”. Most of the rest is still very good.

I actually listened to their demo Mayfield about a year ago. What do you think of that? I’d say it’s much more even than this but the peaks aren’t as high.

In a weird way, despite the better recording and production here, this album kind of feels and plays more like a demo tape than Mayfield does.

I can see that. It definitely feels more cohesive and the material is really strong. I honestly can't believe not a single track from Mayfield made it to this album.

I think If Mayfield had been released officially in proper quality in 1991 like it was supposed this to this band would be way more revered when it comes to the gaze genre. It would've been coming out right around the same time as Loveless & Just For A Day or even before.

The issue I have with Mayfield (the main reason I have it on a 3.5 rather than a 4 even though I find it a great listen throughout) is that it's almost too cohesive, no songs really stand out on it and I can't remember what most of them sound like individually. One reason that might be the case though is the (lack of) production which makes everything a bit more obscured.

With this on the other hand, every song is fairly distinct and there's a solid variety of styles. It feels more demo-y in that it has a kind of "throw everything at the wall" feel. Plus some songs feel more like sketches that could be fleshed out further ("My Aquarium" for example, I know they actually did flesh out into a full band arrangement). I am digging this a lot though, almost more than I feel like I should.
