What grinds my gears is that whenever someone makes something a little crazy and strange, people like mcg182 call them pretentious.

"whenever someone makes something a little crazy and strange, people like mcg182 call them pretentious."

Eh.. I don't think it's really that. Bath isn't any less strange than this. If anything it's more strange.. and he clearly likes that album. It seems like the weirdness wasn't the deterrent, it was more the the fact that he felt this just didn't sound like maudlin of the Well to him.. more like Kayo Dot doing an impression of motW.

yeah his reasoning for this not being good seems to be mostly because its not m/ enough for him

Bands change. Only the worst bands sound the same throughout their whole careers. Also, complaining that motW has Kayo Dot influences is ridiculous since they share most of the members.

Yeah. You summed it up pretty well, NT:

"

lol he thinks its made of bath/body map interludes because it has no heavy sections which makes him mad.

its not as good as Bath or Body but its beautifully composed, brilliantly produced for an underground music album and retains toby's mastery of atmospheric composing beautifully

album is great

review is not

I mean I never said I agreed with his negative opinion about the band changing up their sound. But I just think it's kind of a quick, unfounded judgement to say that people like this reviewer will hear something weird and just immediately write it off as pretentious. He obviously likes other strange albums.. even some by this band. And plus his whole reason for not liking it wasn't really because it was weird.. he just didn't like the direction Toby went in. So yeah I just think it was kind of an unfair judgement to make, that's all.

"What bothers me the most about this album is not the album itself."

This sort of thing should tell pretty much everyone that it's a shitty review. low score derived not

from the actual MUSIC.

I've listened to The Human Abstract, Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Do Unexpect, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Arcturus, Tool, Neurosis, and a lot of other experimental artists, and this is the only album I found pretentious. So shut up, Mr. Know It All. Also, when mental retardation is completely relevant to what you're saying, then yes, I'd say it's mature.

feanaro, lots of reviewers on this site say how much they hate the album based on the fact that it was supposed to deliver some nostalgia and innovation, but ended up ripping off other artists and being lazy.

Well, the truth is I don't really think the album is that bad. If I'm being fair, I'd even go as far as to say that it is a great album. But that doesn't detract from what I said about me hating this album.

"This experimental band doesn't sound the same as they did on previous albums" is basically what I got from this. Imagine that, an experimental band that tries different things. Huh.
