this kind of "sludge" gets boring pretty quick to me.

oh and regards to your whole number thing, why focus on the most arbitrary part of a review? the number rating system means nothing without writing to back it up, so much so that most people throw up a number rating only because they have to. focusing on a "grade" is retarded, focus on the pros and cons set forth because that's where the weight is.

You are probably referring to one of my comments. I didn't include anything about rating in the review and I never do this because of the reasons you've just stated. The thing is that I sometimes find ratings interesting to discuss, even if it's often pointless.

@redskyformiles: Ok. Still it's nothing when you compare it to what's going on in the list section at times.

This band is great, it's just that they're basically like Kylesa Jr.

They are equally similar to Kylesa and early Mastodon in fact. And totally similar to Motherboar out of more obscure acts. The familiarity is actually my biggest gripe about this.

Really liked Passage Through Purgatory but never got that into Taste The Sin. May give this a go at some point though.

This band are pretty good, but they're dampened by the fact that there are a lot of bands out there doing this thing but better.

Point taken ;).

In my previous comment about the last Nevermore album, those ratings came along with the respective reasoning behind them, which is precisely what you say in your comment and i couldn't agree more.

What i wanted to say was that, with this album, Greg saw the glass half-full(++) with water and backed up his 4/5 rating with proper reasoning in his aptly sized review.

The Hellenic MH review I referred to previously, saw the glass half-empty (2.5/5 rating) with water and while it had the size of a medium-sized Sputnik soundoff (ok magazines inherently don't have the space that Internet provides, but...), it gave no further reasoning as to why the record is mediocre, it just stated that the record is mediocre because it doesn't reinvent the wheel, period.

@Deathcar: No, I cannot agree with you man. The band tends to mix their sludge roots with hardcore to great effect. Both Kylesa and Baroness are more about slower, more traditional kind of sludge. Of course you can find some obvious similarities within certain tracks (the biggest flaw of the entire album imo), yet the sound of this and let's say the latest Kylesa album are not very alike on the whole. Besides, I guess I prefer 'Set The Dial' to the latest Kylesa and Baroness releases because it's tighter and more focused. Opinions are opinions though.

@Voivod: I really fail to see any problem with your previous comment. Indeed, short, not very descriptive reviews are MH's biggest problem. You need to be a very skilled writer in order to capture the essence of the album in one concise paragraph. It seems that a lot of MH reviewers are just not good enough to do it.

No. It's completely different. There's absolutely no black metal on this, nor vintage rock'n'roll.

The leading riff in "Growing Horns" makes me think of Therapy? so much. The ending of "Crossroads And Thunder" also resembles their more experimental work.
