I've settled on a 4 for this. It would be a 3.5 for the standard album, but I'm gonna include the deluxe edition tracks.

Thanks guys.
Aso: were you not in complete disagreement with me earlier? Your rating is only .5 higher than mine, unless your disagreement is with my thoughts on past albums and how this stands up against them.

Right, I should have probably added "and the score" to my exception. Haha. I could've sworn I mentioned something about ratings. Must've been on one of the other reviews (never knew Evanescence was so popular on sputnik).
Yes, what you just mentioned about the past albums was one aspect of it. There were also the parts where you: called "What You Want" their best single (I believe it's their worst aside perhaps from "Call Me When You're Sober"), referred to "Made of Stone" and "The Other Side" as filler (two of my personal favorites and two that showcase the "band" mentality strongly with the guitar riff in the former being more memorable than the vocals and with both the guitars and drums leading the way throughout the latter), and pointed to "Lost in Paradise" as an example of experimentation (although I do enjoy the song, it doesn't strike me as much more than a simple fusion of "My Immortal" and "Lithium").

Fair enough my friend, to each their own. I personally see "Lost in Paradise" as a mix of elements
that make Evanescence so strong: their ability to elicit an emotional response from their listener
while maintaining a theatrical feel. So yes, it definitely does shadow "My Immortal," but it also
feels like something new that draws influence from artists like 'Bjork'. I think it's just going to
boil down to preferences.

Yeah, it's a quality song for sure. I just didn't feel it brought anything new into the mix.
That's cool. The fact that we disagree on the strong points, but both enjoy it equally proves it's a solid album with some depth and not something one-dimensional.

Great review. This album is 10 years late though.

Thanks fromtheinside and Awesomesauce.

Agreed.
god now i know why i never come to the review site anymore
Good, stay away then.

Good review, but can't stand this album. Fallen is their only good work imo.

I'm surprised this is getting any love at all here. I find Evanescence to be the epitome of terrible music.
|

I really do dislike Evanescence on the whole so I thought for sure I would be trashing this album in my review, but it's actually not that bad at all. Give it a try to find out - if you don't like it after the first three songs then it's not for you.
|
| |
I'll give it a go.

"Swimming Home" is so relaxing.

"My Heart is Broken" is definitely my new favorite Evanescence song. I also like "Erase This". Other than that, the rest of the songs are kind of good/average.

This is their best album yet. Amy is singing her heart out, and the guitars, bass, and drums are better. Some really good hooks in these songs.
I'd give this album a 3-4, and this isn't really the type of music I jam. If you like Evanescence I could see this album being a 4-5. This is a damn good album.

Wow, this is very well-written and logically structured review (pos) but if What You Want is Evanescence's best single to date, then no wonder I gave up on them years ago. I felt embarrassed listening to this album stream even when I was by myself. Just not my thing. At all.
|
| |
You felt embarrassed listening to an album?
Fear is the mind killer.
And before you go anywhere, you need to 5 Slayer's Show No Mercy. You don't even have it ranked.
Just saying....since you care about your image and all.

Yeah, there are a lot of songs here that are just 'good' but there aren't many I'm recently itching
to play. Still, when Evanescence are playing to their potential they're great.

Thanks man. Fair enough, like I said, this isn't for everyone and it's a low 3.5 for me. I'm just
shocked to see them evolving as a band - so many artists today who suck have typically always
sucked, but who knows, perhaps Evanescence will eventually pull away from their roots entirely one
day and create something truly unique.

Valerius, I'm really sorry I hurt your feelings and appreciate your points, especially how important I take my carefully cultivated image. You really "get" me. As a result, however, I can't follow your advice given your "nooby" status on this site. I mean, what would that make me look like? Not cool, that's for sure!!!! Besides, between you and me, I actually think that album is kind of too scary.

Lol. Nice one.
