I guess I don't see tempo as being measured in numbers (even though it technically is). Pace was the only other word that came to mind.

Ahh, it's a singular/plural thing... Carrying on from the word "writer".
When in doubt, I just ask myself "Does it sound right?" This does imo.

Just got back from seeing them. The venue was smaller than they've been used to over the past few years they seemed to thrive on it, easily the best I've seen them.

The other thing is that no matter how you compare their albums, these new songs are likely to sound just as good live I think.
