I liked the review, even though I was skeptical as to whether I would after reading the first paragraph.

"Any chance for beauty was replaced – intentionally it seemed – by ugliness and abrasiveness."
Correct, considering what was on the radio at the time. Context is everything and it was the perfect album at the perfect time. It saved us from a very New kids year. I'd say it's about time for another one of these to topple the pop heavy charts again soon.

It's kinda cool to hear another take on such a popular album but that's really it... I mean I'd rather

Nevermind is too pop for some people, understandable. That's what's so brilliant about Cobain's songwriting though, it's so simplistic and stripped down to the raw basics but so nuanced and layered, it's what makes his work so brilliant and universal. He knew that melody drove everything, and that lyrics came second. Then of course it helps that he was a brilliant lyricist as well, so it all came together in a perfect package.
I'm not surprised In Utero is more popular here though. It's far less pop-oriented and more abstract, heavier influence from noise rock in general so it probably appeals to the indie crowd more as it's everything that was great about Cobain's songwriting without the main focus on pop and melody. Plus everyone loves Nevermind. It's not cool to like something that everyone loves and is one of the highest selling albums of all time.
