Taylormemer, you get the first response because you obviously put a lot of thought into the writing of your comment and the reading of the review - and there's nothing I appreciate more.

Anyway, on to my response. I think something we should agree on is the fact that this review was written for the sole purpose of foisting an adult's perspective on a children's movie. That juxtaposition comes in many shapes and forms, from accusations of pedophilia to marveling at lyrical depth, and is precisely why the review ends up being reasonably effective (if I may say so myself). Do I buy for one second that kids saw the hyenas as the "evil black-skinned usurpers of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant society", or even gave second thought to the fact that Rafiki might be a pervert? No. Then again, do I believe that they managed to appreciate The Lion King as more than simply a wonderfully paced hand-drawn animated flick? Again, no. Adults have the benefit of perspective and hindsight, and it is that exact element that I was banking on to help this piece of writing work. As a kid, all that you care about is how flashy the show is, and how engaging are the songs playing in the background.

This conjecture necessarily leads to the following question: are Disney movies strictly for children? I don't think so, and although far be it from me to suggest that adults will be as weak-minded as to be influenced by the portrayal of animals on screen and subsequently make the mistake of conflating them with members of society, I think many Disney movies do speak to the minds which have a greater understanding of the world. I don't think I can find an animated children's flick which does not employ some use of stereotypes to push the story a little (good storytelling always requires a bit of embellishment and exaggeration), but that's exactly the point, right? Disney is trying to speak to its older audience - how else can one explain the usage of Nazi imagery in "Be Prepared"? Maybe Disney did sneak in the word "SEX" into the scene where Simba flops on the moss and it blows away in the wind (look it up). To that end, I think the style of writing in this review inadvertently suggests a simple yet often overlooked mantra: when perusing a work of art, be observant and open minded. The amount of things one can find when looking a little harder and being more objective is truly staggering. In the words of Scar, "I know it sounds sordid, but you'll be rewarded."

That being said, it is true that I may have attempted to "roll the gold" a bit too hard while writing this, and it is perhaps that failing of mine which you have sensed while reading the review. Pushing too hard rarely works when it comes to trying to be humorous. To that end, the fault is mine - and is something I hope to eradicate with time and experience.

I think that's about it. I sincerely hope this response is satisfactory =)

Mulan is a better movie, if just for Eddie Murphy.

Lion King > all Disney. Like it has everything I could want in a movie. The only thing Mulan has on it is basically the greatest song ever created

@ Irv
Response is satisfactory, and a well defended position. I still question intent vs. coincidence. Do clouds inherently to look like shapes, or is it really just our confirmation bias in play? I tend to think the latter. In some circumstances Disney may show the intent, but they are to me too slight to be considered of any major significance, unless they have shown it blatantly, (which to me they generally don't), or have actually admitted to it.

The "SEX" thing is a total joke, sorry. That's just again some adult connecting the dots of abstraction, further proving some people just have nothing to contribute to society.

Favourite Disney movies:
Disney on its own - Fantasia
Disney-Pixar - WALL-E
