Alligator = boxer > high violet
Just doesn't have the emotional impact of either alligator or boxer.

alright here it is
as many people have already said, this is their most consistent work. in my opinion, the material here is just as good as some of the better moments on boxer. boxer and alligator may both have a single moment, maybe two, that exceed anything on here, but then the rest of those albums (while great) fly just below high violet in quality. to me, that makes this the best record the national have ever made because i can listen to the whole thing two or three times in one day and not come across a weak moment. but its all personal preference, boxer and alligator are superb records and im not going to fault anyone for liking them more

If you were to replace every reference to high violet in that with alligator/boxer and replace every alligator/boxer reference with high violet then you would perfectly describe my opinion of the nationals big three

i disliked the national the first time i heard them
i still remember listening to apartment story and thinking 'what's the big deal, it's a guy mumbling overtop of decent drumming'

first time ive heard them? ive been listening to them for over a year
and apartment story is perfect, there is no flaw, nothing to discriminate. the beauty is not mearly in the eye of the beholder, it is right there for you to absorb through your aural senses, to indulge in and to love willingly.
