It actually has more cleans than UROBOROS if anything, actually. What makes is so heavy is such prominent use of Toshiya's low end strings, plus he's playing slap, so you really get that throbbing bass the entire time.
Distortion on the guitars are also really clocked up, and the playing style is really metalcorish at points in terms of riffage. They're also hugging those lower strings a lot more until they hit choruses or solos, so you get this really dark tone. Probably some minor scale-based stuff if you look at the music theory.
Drums probably are the biggest change here; Shinya just gets ridiculous with how proggy it is at some parts; it changes time signatures like no other, and he's got everything on perfect timing, especially the bass drums.
Overall, it's all just expertly crafted and mastered. If you liked Dozing Green or Vinushka off UROBOROS, you'll probably like the album as a whole. Definitely a lot darker and edgier.

very impressive album. i would have preferred far less clean vocals, just because the screaming is so fucking good and unique. the instrumentation is not nearly as good as the vocals but everything is very good. i really enjoyed the bass in particular. the guitars were good but not as technically proficient as i expected. still have to give this a few more listens. really enjoying it

Took me by surprise. I've always enjoyed their previous albums and have been a fan since the release of 'Macabre' but felt, after 'Uroboros', they wouldn't be able to pull off another impressive album right after. Sure fooled me! I'm loving it so far.

It's bad but not horrible.

Wow, so many 5's

it's definitely an amazing album...not quite up to Uroboros standards tho.

Listening. Not quite sure how I feel about this vs. Uroboros. It is definitely an awesome album and logical progression from Uroboros but it's also a lot more to digest. That being said, I need more listens.

Am I retarded for thinking that Beelzebub sounds like Opeth?

Hmm... I need to listen to this more to really say anything about it. It is definitely heavy, intense, and complicated, yet it sounds similar to other bands. I don't know where I'm getting this familiarity, but maybe it's just me. Anyway, Uroboros will always be my favorite Dir en grey album.

^^Basically what I've been thinking since this album dropped. I always felt like the awkward odd man out for liking them up till now.

at times, this sounds like your average deathcore band with a better vocalist

I would not call this average at all few if any deathcore bands could barely accomplish what these guys do. I wouldn't even call this album deathcore I can see some songs being called that though.
