There's not much to get, really. It's uplifting and a little bittersweet, and its simplicity is - for me - part of its charm.

There is always an underlying brilliance on these albums though which I find mostly stems from Zach Condon's ability to create music that fits a region or scene perfectly and this album is no different. Ive always enjoyed Beirut, but when i began backpacking through europe and other places I really began to see another side of them.

Your post did not sound pretentious to me at all, sexualsoybean. I do the same thing often--posting after a few brews--so perhaps I'm being a bit defensive, but until you mentioned it, I just thought: "Huh. I bet this would be a good band to listen to while travelling around Europe." I don't understand the aversion to openness around these parts. Anyway, cool album so far; it's the first I've listened to from this band.

Holy shit, "Goshen" has almost the exact same melody as the song "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills, & Nash. Or, if you prefer, the one, the only, Jimmy Buffett.

its one of the reasons i consider them one of my favourite artists, becaue they always bring me back to moments and moods.

Having replicated the sounds of the Balkans, France, Mexico & Zach Condon's bedroom on previous releases, Beirut are simply themselves on 3rd LP 'The Rip Tide'. Authentic Indie-pop is the genre of choice here, yet the gorgeous melodies are still laced with the usual barrage of instruments. Both musically & lyrically, the songwriting is especially impressive, even if it is played too safe on occasions. Most importantly, there is no sign of the filler which plagued the band's earlier LPs, making it not only Beirut's most consistent record to date, but also their most accessible. Recommended Tracks: A Candle's Fire, The Rip Tide, Santa Fe & Vagabond.

So Davey, is your ranking: Rip Tide > Flying Club > Gulag? Because that's the opposite of mine haha.

Adabelle, I actually think I prefer Gulag over FCC. I know most people think FCC is their best, but pretty much the entire 1st half of Gulag is really good. I guess I struggle with the laid-back tempo of FCC... Either that or I'm anti-French.
