The difference is that this groove-oriented riff style seems to share much more time with harmonized leads and straight-up guitar solos than has been the case for the last few albums. Haven't heard this but Come Clarity featured a lot of great leads.but it is also obvious that he has become much more comfortable with his singing. I'll take his singing on R2R over his current any day.
Great review though, I'm glad you did this one.

Album= A Sense of Purpose + Soundtrack To Your Escape
Probably In Flames' worst release yet, hopefully it will grow on me and yes I am an In Flames fanboy.

I'm a fanboy too, and man this owns ASOP. Far more creative and energized. They actually sound inspired for once.

"Too bad Anders Fridén is still their vocalist"
I hate this guy.

This was better than I was expecting and has some genuinely good guitar harmonies and solos that they unfortunately could not capitalize on/went away far too quickly. It was almost as if they were detached pieces of a song that held no bearing in any sort of build-up or progression, instead all we got was, say, an awesome intro lead that degrades into the subpar, groove-centered, chord-heavy riffs of their new sound.
Shame, really, because this could have been at least good. The album is way too long for what it puts on the table and Friden is still a bad vocalist who only really shines during drawn-out cleans. Good review, Trey, I've been thinking about writing something about this but you did a great job.

I think I am in the minority with this but ASOP is one of my favourite In Flames albums.

IF is one of the most tragic stories in metal. It's also a shame that they barely play any of their music that actually matters live.

YES hes such a shit vocalist 1st one was much better

Liked the review, I've only listened to Come Clarity before and that was "eh" for me; might pick this up if I get bored with current digs though.

The Jester Race and Whoracle are a must. They're landmarks in melodic death metal.

Still haven't heard this. I didn't mind Deliver Us but I agree, their recent material does lack a bit. Jester Race and Whoracle are great albums but are extremely overrated IMHO. I still raise my glass to Colony and Clayman.

Where The Ships Dwell is my favorite on album. Beautiful synth melody and ok vocal is what I expected to hear from In Flames. I also like their first single, nothing terrific, but somehow it`s a catchy song.

That performance of F(r)iend posted earlier is epic, that is one of my favorite In Flames songs.

The Jester Race is good, but overrated as fuck. Whoracle is where it's at with this band.

JR and Whoracle are tied for my favorite IF album, with Colony treading close behind.
I like Clayman a lot, but that was the start of the cheesiness.
