lol. I argue about this all the time. I think most of the people here like In Utero better simply because it's less polished and commercial, which IMO is a retarded reason to like something more, especially when the "commercial" album in question is a trendsetting masterpiece.

this is a pretty unfounded assumption

American Idiot was also a trendsetting and genre-defining album, that doesn't make it fantastic...

Look, I appreciate you have nothing to say of any worth - really I do - but maybe you could go say something stupid somewhere else?

Realistically it's probably time I gave American Idiot a try... it's only been 6.5 years.

It's pretty good, but it's not one of the best albums of all time like all Green Day fans try to make you believe...

The difference between Nevermind and American Idiot is the fact that Nevermind is a masterpiece, and American Idiot is a bloated pseudo hippie leftist fap fest that doesn't hold a candle to Dookie.

^ you've been on Sputnik for years, you should know better than anyone how many people here automatically dismiss more commercial material in favor of raw, less accessible stuff in an effort to appear cool.

Omni, kanecooper is not new to Sputnik, he's been around for 4 years under different names. His charm is lies in being abrasive.

and in my opinion American Idiot is a concept album devoted to slamming Bush under the thinly veiled guise of a rock opera about America.

I like this one more because it's more consistent mostly. but I do think it's rawness plays a part too -- not because it makes it sound less commercial, but because you can define all of the subtleties and pick apart the arrangements easier -- where as Nevermind has a lot of songs that aren't that great (although a few classics too) plus the polished sound lowers the replay value for me (you can hear everything in a song with just one or two listens -- In Utero songs can reveal new layers even 5-10 listens later)

plus it just sounds more honest/genuine/passionate to me.

OK, I don't mean to burst your bubble but I have no idea who you are and have no recollection of ever speaking to you before.

i'm not so sure this is the case (i mean there will always be a few like this), but in general i think it's just an assumption made by those who sit more comfortably on the 'commercial' wall. they tend not to see the appeal and so those who do stray into less accessible and more artsy music are just trying to be cool, because there's no way they can actually like that stuff right?

EDIT: i also want to make it clear i'm not digging at people with more 'commercial' (using this term pretty lightly), taste because opinions opinions opinions

You are correct sir! I feel it should have been aimed at the whole Republican Party but whatever...
