This one has been all over the place for me. Started off as a 4, went down to a 3.5, very briefly fell down to a 3 before getting bumped back up, and now it's getting close to a 4 again.

In a genre that succeeds at developing a deep, sorrowful background, it's no wonder bands like Bright Eyes want to shed a little light. The set up of this album plays safe to the ears and plays it to their roots. Though it's simply not the best album by them, it sure isn't awful. The album feels like it's a farewell final album. Though it's completely understandable why this band wanted to make a plain and simple album. With the beginning of a new decade, bands like: The Decemberists, The Mountain Goats, and The Dear Hunter; have made albums that focus little on their venturous stories and have decided to focus on individual songs rather than the whole. Even moody band Brand New has plans on releasing a "happier" album than make their usual. None of these choices affect the bands, in fact it proves how exceptional they are rather than follow a predictable pattern. The raw deal here is that it's a break. A break from the norm and a chance to gain new ground.

shell games is nearly a damn masterpiece. saw them live right after this album was released and they played songs from throughout their entire career. and of course conor was drunk and couldn't stop himself from shouting political obscenities but that's expected. they put on an incredible show though

this album is a huge, albeit expected, disappointment-- when taken in relationship to their earlier work.

I think on it's own merits, it's a good album, but it's hard for me judge it on its own merit because it's such a huge

disgrace to both the songwriting and visceral emotional power of Oberst's former material (up until Cassadaga...)

He was a poetically lyrical genius-- no more.
