This is a good collection of country rock songs. It defintely grows on you too. Good review!
I don't know if it was necessary though.

waior: you need the new Spokes album. They're from Manchester, plus the album rules hard

to people asking if they should get this without hearing other Decemberists stuff: this stands alone i would say. hearing their other albums would help put this into context a bit but you really don't need to dl these guys in any real order (except maybe leave The Hazards of Love until at least the third spot)

I kind of agree with that, but I do lean towards the argument that hearing this in context really makes it sound warmer

well context is always helpful I guess, not necessary in this case though

Sowing, I hadn't thought about this album like that until I read your review (specifically, that chunk I quoted), so you may be on to something actually

well don't get me wrong it's still amazing on its own. but given the choice, i would listen to crane wife then this

Good review, Sowing. You're getting good at this.
Still haven't listened to anything by these guys. I'll stop putting it off eventually. Pretty low score for so much contrib support.

Thanks man. Yeah I'm sort of surprised but at the same time I'm not, because I had this at a 2.5, and it really had to work to get up to the rating I have it at now. In fact, that might be the biggest rating climb of any album in my 2+ years here. So maybe it just needs more time to grow into a 4-4.5-5 than most people are willing to invest.

What didn't you like about it at first?

He thought it was boring or something.

yeah my first soundoff said it lacked eveything that made the decemberists who they were, or something
then i listened to it more and more, and one night in the car i was just like holy shit i need to go on sputnik and apologize to waior

It really is a great review, Sowing, but reading it over I just caught one tiny thing:
"The King is Dead is the album’s title, sure…but it is also a metaphor for its unraveled, resounding simplicity."
Should this be "unrivaled", or am I reading it wrong? I'm not sure, but it did stick out. :3

unraveled works i mean i dont know if americans spell it like that id spell it unravelled but

I meant 'unraveled', conradtao, although what you said would make sense in the context of the statement as well.
and as far as the spelling, I typed it up in microsoft word and it is accepting both spellings (with one l or with two l's), so i guess i'll just leave it as is

K. Finally listened to this. I really like this on first listen. I like the 70s/80s folk rock feel that it has. Reminds me of Dan Fogelberg/ Little River Band kinda stuff.
