I gave the band the benefit of the doubt and listened to the entire album, and I agree with Jared's review wholeheartedly. It's not just the fact that it's not ground-breaking, it's the fact that even though they play a style of melodic death that scores of other bands play they still manage to fall short of anything approaching enjoyable. Their melodies lack substance and emotion, their guitar solos are cliche, their vocals are second-rate, and their songwriting is simply lackluster. Having multiple well-known guests can't save the album when the pieces these guests contribute to the album are ill-conceived. No matter how good the player is (which they are good musicians, no doubt), they are only as good as their own songwriting allows them to be.

Music is very subjective which means that we all have different opinions. . . . how can you deny that Christian Alvestam is an amazing vocalist. . . . I personally think this reviewer is a dumbass and has no clue what he is talking about. . . . This album is nothing groundbreaking but it definitely does not deserve a poor rating by any means.
lol, ok bro.

You just said you all have different opinions then called Observer a dumbass because he gave it a low rating. So you're the dumbass sir.

Well, this is pretty 0815. But Melodic Death Metal is becoming pretty generic anyway atm.

My favorite part is how all the 5s are from people that joined on the day they rated this album.
And most of them have only rated one other album a 5, which happens to be this band's other album.

Maybe, just maybe, they're fans, like me, who have come across this very odd review by googling and wanting to find out more about the band *gasp - what a concept* I don't usually comment on these sorts of things and neither do I, in general, enjoy keyboard warriorism, however, I just couldn't keep my mouth shut on this one. As much as I disagree with Mr Observers viewpoint, I understand that it's each to their own when it comes to musical taste and preference, but I did have just one question...what was the motive behind specifying the keyboardists gender? That's about as musically relevant as the band being caucasian and left handed. Not wanting to start an online battle but, just putting it out there, you could be potentially treading on some shaky ground with comments such as those. Keep it objective and relevant so we can all enjoy. Now I'm going to go vote me a 5

I don't usually comment on these sorts of things...
Probably should have kept it that way.

I don't think I've ever seen such an instance of people making accounts here to 5 an album that got a negative review.

wow a lot of hate lol. people can't have opinions anymore? the album is ok, though leto destinatus was better in my opinion. melodic death is kind of a dying breed now isn't it? which is sad, because it rules.

"its ridiculous how much the reviewer is being insulted from fans of the band"
No doubt this is because the review lacks any meaningful substance and fails to give the reader an accurate account of what the album actually sounds like. "Why bother" is exactly the comment that should be applied to this review. More objectivity and accurate descriptiveness would benefit the reader more in the future.
Not being a big fan of Universum's first album (great for a debut but not a classic imo) I was totally expecting this album to be garbage after reading this review. This is definitely not the case, it surely must rank as one of the better melodic death albums released in last 12 months or so...
Anyway, here's what others are saying:
Universum - Mortuus Machina: For anyone who enjoys Scar Symmetry will get a kick out of this album. Each tracks sounds different from the last, but almost all the tracks sound absolutely incredible. Guest vocals are done by Christian Älvestam, so you definitely hear some Scar Symmetry influence. Speaking of vocals, this album has some of the best vocals I've heard in... hmmm... forever. The production value has also increased greatly since Leto Destinatus. Hard to pass up for anyone who enjoys top-notch Melodic Death Metal. Notable tracks: Fractured Archetype, Aeon Displacement, Morte Noir, Blank Infinity - 9.5/10

It doesn't sound so bad but I don't like their clean voice chorus.

Music is very subjective which means that we all have different opinions.
And then you talk shit about how the reviewer doesn't like the album. Someone's parents weren't careful enough when handling their child. Think you've had one too many head injuries buddy.

No doubt this is because the review lacks any meaningful substance and fails to give the reader an accurate account of what the album actually sounds like.
A review is full of what the REVIEWER thinks of the album, not what the band's followers think of the album. We can't all look at the album the same way. This review is HIS take on the album. Just because his view of the album isn't the same as yours doesn't make it wrong. I haven't listened to this yet... and maybe I shouldn't. I wouldn't want to enjoy it and turn into a brain-dead prick like the rest of the band's fan-base.

I enjoyed the album. But I need to listen to it some other time again, who knows my rating might drop.
|
| |
Don't drop your rating just because other people don't like it.
But in the same vein, don't create account solely to wall-of-text a negative viewpoint.
This is still the internet.
