thing is everything great this band has done has something behind it, something bold whether narrative, arrangement, genre pulled from or otherwise...this is just a well performed abeit stale performance by the band...
That said it may well be a genius move, if the next album is as ambitious as THOL

So? It was all the better for it. But even still, my reasons for disliking this album aren't that it's not 'ambitious' enough, I just find it to be boring and dull. Still, I can at least safely say that there are some great ideas here.

I can't follow this discussion anymore. The whole point of my review is to state that I like this album BECAUSE of Hazards of Love, and while I didn't enjoy HoL that much, it is entirely necessary for me to enjoy this. Which sounds really weird, I know, but it comes down to intertextuality kinda thing, where this just feels so clean and approachable compared to some of their other stuff. Is it profound? No. Is it going to become one of my favourites ever? Probably not. But dammit I like the songs.
