"Felix Culpa, you know you could offer a differing viewpoint, maybe as to why you think it's a classic and

worthy of being your username?"

Haha yeah I knew that username would cause some questions of me being a total fanboy for this band but my real name is Felix and when I joined sputnik I listened to this album a lot and kinda dug the name FeluxCulpa. I don't even think the band was in the database when I joined so no one that didn't know of the band got the connection.

I guess I've strayed away from saying why I've given it a five (It's is the highest score you can give and I am pretty picky when it comes to what I give the rating to but it's good to keep in mind everyone have a different criteria to what is and isn't a classic) because it's something that not everyone might get from listening to the album as it is more of a personal feeling I get from the album.

As for the reason why I like the album so much is that I find it has en earnest feel to it. I know the band had personal struggles during the recording of the album and I feel that shows in their songs. Something I don't get from most bands. And of course i think the music is fantastic, the vocals, lyrics, guitars, drums the whole thing. I also find that were something new that was revealed on every listen. It had lasing power. A big reason to why it is a classic to me (Didn't have it as a five until maybe 2 months ago)

I could go on but I would just babble til' no end. Hope you get my point of view a little better and I hope I didn't seem too negative. You are still one of the best reviewers on the site Sea

^lol (edit: shit that "lol" was for Sea's response to alaclahol, not you Felix)

ok I get what you're saying now -- that the lack of originality here actually affects pretty much every other element of the album too, especially because this genre depends so much on emotion and sincerity to succeed (sonically speaking, I can see how a lack of uniqueness can hinder sincerity). Nice to have a real discussion on Sputnik from time to time lol (pos btw)

Felix: yeah thanks, sorry if I sounded like a dick I wasn't trying to be confrontational haha, I was more just curious than anything...

Inveigh: exactly. and thanks, you're probably right... I should have done a better job at communicating points like that in the review I guess, but I was hung up on other areas of it... anyway yeah, I think we're on the same page. Nothing against people who enjoy this, like I understand why you guys do and it's pretty justified-- that's the worst when people take negative reviews personally haha.

I know, this is the most obvious complaint about my analysis. Like I said in the review though, "It may irk some that comparisons to similar bands are the most prominent descriptor for Sever Your Roots, but that’s just it-- The Felix Culpa craft a product so derivative that their album doesn’t demand any better. Comparisons to too-like albums are the most apt way to describe Sever Your Roots, and also telling of the album’s glaring weakness."

Comparing this album to other artists is fine, that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that its the foundation for your whole review and it seems to be based around the idea that these guys didn't put an album out in 2004, which obviously pre-dates that little spiel you made about "Brand New did this 2 years ago etc". You even call this The Felix Culpa's debut to boot. I'm not saying that The Felix Culpa influenced Brand New, As Cities Burn and whoever the other band was you that you mentioned, but they were doing a few years before your comparisons.

No, I'm saying that the material here is not only derivative, but it also adds nothing new to the equation, is tedious, uninventive, stale, etc.

You spend so much time comparing and drawing parallels that you don't definitively come out and say "oh yeah, and these guys play this type of music really badly". You just say its stale as a result of it being unoriginal and that's it - which is more than enough for your rating, but for a review that you knew was gonna draw some flak it might've been a good idea to go into more detail

I can agree that the album drags on too much at some points, but I wouldn't say it's a 2 by any means. The review was definitely well written though, so I pos'd.

I agree with the review. They have some serious skills as musicians, but they are not very good songwriters yet crafting some pretty forgettable tunes. The album totally lacks something that would distinguish them from other similar bands.

This was alright. But I think you give Brand new a little too much originality credit in your review. I mean they're good but not really all that original either.

Not to mention the rhythm section of the Felix Culpa are waaayyyy better than all the other bands mentioned in the review...though we have already debated our reasons we like and dislike the album so I won't draw that out anymore.

Even though I don't agree with the review, you still are a legit reviewer on this site in my book.

Am now more interested than ever in listening to this album just to compare the views. Can't comment much on the actual music as I haven't listened but it's interesting that you're accusing it of being part of a post-hardcore style that's already played out - Brand New, As Cities Burn and MewithoutYou don't seem that strongly bound together to be able to attack a meld of them as derivative (perhaps because I love all those bands). I guess you could chuck Thrice's newer stuff and perhaps the Republic of Wolves in there as well but are there any other bands that you're seeing as part of this style?

ya, they need the other review as the default or someone needs to write another review...it honestly doesn't touch on too much of the actual music really.

Nova, this album is worth checking out. Just give it a couple fair listens.

I have to disagree with this review. As you claim in your review this album does take parts of other bands that influenced the members, but this band combines these influences to create their own sound. What band hasn't done that? Even Brand New are fiarly derivative of their influences. This band is far from plagiarizing others works.
