I listen to stuff way goofier than this, so I'm enjoying it. It doesn't sound like anything I'd really listen to that often though. Will have to hear more.

The Linear Scaffold is one of my favorite albums ever, getting this NOW

I honestly don't understand the appeal of this music. I never could listen to Sigh and now I know I won't be getting into Solefald. Can this really be called Black Metal?
Seriously though, WTF?

It can really be called black metal, the same way that the first full length Arcturus record was still considered black metal. Besides, if the big issue is whether or not to call this black metal then it's already obvious that this isn't for you.

There's different kinds of black metal, if you knew anything about the genre you would know that. This is black metal, just the avant-garde kind.

No!!! You've just started a sub-genre war, I just fuckin know it.

Haha no I doubt it. Just stating the obvious.

I can't stand avante-garde/progressive black metal anymore. When I was like 15, I thought it was awesome. Good positive review though.

Well, this is a bit more streamlined than your average avant-garde black metal album. It's even more streamlined than other Solefald albums. Actually "traditional" is probably a better word.

Actually, it should be the other way around. Avant-garde is not so straight forwad and demands advanced listeners. Pure and cult black metal is mainly for 15-year old guys I suppose(with minor exceptions of course).

There are plenty of non-15 year old guys who listen to "kvlt" black metal.

Yeah but it seems that only the 15 year old ones (and mindless idiots), that feel that they have to get angry about any music that uses black metal as an influence or have a decent production.

totally agree with Willy

Totally disagree. The prog/avante-garde stuff is so cheesey. I like the more raw simplistic shit or the atmospheric/droney black metal styles the most.
I highly doubt many 15 year olds go from listening to Darkthrone to listening to this lol.I started off listening to the more melodic stuff like Emperor and then started enjoying the harsh stuff, which to me is what black metal should be.Obviously everybody has different ideas but I think it's dumb to put all these different styles into black metal that don't fit.
|

I guess i'm not doubting the fact that it's black metal, i just don't understand the appeal of the avante-garde style. Not my cup of tea i guess.

No it's not dumb at all, some bands - Arcturus is an example - have done a good job mixing stuff with black metal, but yes it doesn't work for everybody.

This is pretty solid. Surprised me a lot.

Yeah I'll agree some bands can do it but there aren't many. Arcturus is alright but nothing I would listen to often.

For me a band can use the basic rock instrumentation and sound as avant-garde as it can get.
Virus and Code are two fine examples that come in mind.

I greatly appreciate bands that don't take themselves too seriously.
