Should I get this? I'm a bit of a Floyd completist BUT I have to admit that I didn't quite like their earlier work that much. Is The Madcap Laughs very similar to an album like, say, Piper?

I didn't know this was possible

I absolutely love this album. And despite it being written by a man who was suffering from mental instability and depression, it's very fun in all of joyous melodies and Syd's signature childish whimsical lyrics. But there are subtle moments in his lyrics where he reveals just how miserable he feels.
"I meant even less to me more than I thought." - "Octopus"
Syd was a genius.

possibly one of the worst reviews I have ever read. Syd was a great innovator. You listen to the album and you can hear its been copied. Its a dislocated album but the guy was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Some of the tracks are not stand out. What do you expect. As far as pink floydd are concerned they were never as great without Barrett to me their stuff is over blown and over weighty. Barrett brought a lot to the pink floyd party that was lost on his departure. The fact that it has a minimal sound production qualities (just syd and on his guitar) adds to the sound.
5,easily and 2.5 is just an insult to this guys legacy

this album is one of those few albums that I know I shouldn't like, that is just a poorly recording of
somewhat average pieces of music, but every time I hear "dark globe" of "feel" of any of the songs
really, I stop thinking, i just feel, and I feel this is a great album, a classic, really.

I think this is the typical example of a hit-or-miss album for a music listener. There are the ones saying genius and the ones saying a document of the mental breakdown of an acclaimed genius.
I can see it, because it is dark and depressing but what most miss is that Barrett didn't loose it on here but moreover he did nail his sad charackter down in a way that is as sincere as the songwriting of Daniel Johnston and as deep in the psychedelic sense as nothing that was written before! I am in love with every song on here! After a while one gets the feeling of Barrett being an absolute original. Seriously, out of every guitar downswing i could hear how Barrett swings the guitar. There is no one else, that does it like him. He paints chords and melodies. He is taking it from the angle of a true artist. The way the music is arranged it all makes sense and there is no tone that doesn't follow the message or the expression the song is all about. There is not one tone that feels wrong but all at the right place.

With this being said... the whole album is absolutely natural him. it is HIM just as Barrett is. There is no fake! In that sense to call the other album Barrett is very smart! This is what I get from him: He is all about being himself. While most what other musicians do is showing off as a superman-figure, telling fictional stories or being all winding up about interpretating stuff or expressing themselves through the music and not expressing who they are.
The lyrics on this album are gold! The vocal melodies yummy!

Hold on to the steel rail.
post war acid trips into itchycoo park gazing at the mini skirts forever in love while getting scarred from the rockers razor. Revolution, civil rights, equality become the order while the youth become the future.
Matted long hair, wide eyed stare, timeless icon.
That do Row?
