Mangum's firm grasp on warped melody is evident throughout this album. I'm a big fan on the natural flow the album rides along, including the inclusion of Marching Theme. Each song melds into the following track effortlessly.
The production does indeed sound somewhat amateur but I think it suits the feeling of the tracks. I see it as beauty through imperfection. The relatively clean vocals lost amidst an ocean of fuzz and muffled percussion makes for a unique listening experience.
Finally, I love the cryptic, abstract lyrics. Provided they stay within context of each other and don't appear to be ridiculous for the sake of it, I love being able to interpret them as per my feelings at the time of listening. Granted, there are a couple of ridiculous lyrics here and there on the album, but for the most part I love being washed away by Mangum's fantastical rollercoaster of wordplay.

This album has some amazing moments. I think I like it better than aeroplane. Song Against Sex, Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone and Where You'll Find Me Now are GREAT. April 8th may very well be my favorite Neutral Milk Hotel song, its so haunting. Its only real failing in my opinion is the instrumentals and pree sisters

I love the sound on this album, it's just a shame that most of the songs can't match up to those on ITAOTS. Still enjoying it, though.

Yeah I bought the reissue yesterday. Would've made far more sense if they'd just put the whole EP on it...

This review isn't entirely accurate, and I believe this is a great album so I disagree with the opinion and grade as well. You wanted to rush back to bashing this awesome cd so bad that you called "April 8th" fuzzy and forgettable, when it is actually a quiet, subdued, depressing acoustic song. Just sayin', this album is pretty damn good and this review can eat it

i mean, yeah, no shit it's not as good as Aeroplane. i don't think this is as good as Ferris Wheel on Fire, either. but it's still pretty awesome. so noisy.
