Last classic Tull album (not as in a 5 but you know what I mean).
Some fantastic song writing on here.

i need to give the whole album a try again, i think ive played most of the songs max twice apart from dun ringill which is about 2000 times

Flying Dutchman is a personal favourite from this album (along with Dun RIngill of course). Love pretty much every song on here besides Warm Sporran which is just ok.

After rechecking this, I still can't rate it more than a 3.5. Lack of beautiful melodies I guess. I'm ready to give it another try though. Musicianship is gorgeous with that actual lineup, but it's not enough for me, it seems.

I have high expectations for Heavy Horses, I liked both this and Songs from the Wood. Better be good.

Heavy Horses is best Tull and one of the best albums ever so you should have high expectations.

This album I would say is pretty underrated.

Agreed. Mainly because the two albums that preceded it are incredible.

I hope so, I really like the folk trilogy so far. Songs from the Wood is as of now my favourite Jethro Tull album.

North Sea Oil; 4/5
Orion; 3.5/5
Home; 3.5/5
Dark Ages; 3.5/5
Warm Sporran; 2.5/5
Something's On The Move; 2.5/5
Old Ghosts; 3/5
Dun Ringill; 4/5
Flying Dutchman; 4/5
Elegy; 4.5/5
Pretty consistently dark album. It only has a break in the middle with the up tempo instrumental Warm Sporran that has not much to offer, and seems out of place on here. My favorite, the soothing and melodic closer Elegy, seems misplaced too. I would see it as a closer either on The Christmas Album or on Songs From The Wood. I'm fixed at 3.5 for this album. It's without a doubt the weakest link of the folk trilogy.

I agree that it's definitely the weakest of the "folk trilogy" but that's only because the other two albums are among their very best.
My ratings:
North Sea Oil; 4/5
Orion; 4/5
Home; 3.5/5
Dark Ages; 4/5
Warm Sporran; 2.5/5
Something's On The Move; 3/5

Dun Ringill; 5/5

Our ratings are similar on here. I'll check out what Dun Ringill is all about, so I can sing it along and enjoy more ;)
I keep on alterning a 3.5 and a 4 for Dark Ages. Instrumentally it's awesome, but the vocal lines could be better overall.

Dun Ringill is an ancient ruined castle/fort on a Scottish island. The song poetically describes the setting and specifically the changing weather conditions as the protagonist (from who's point of view the song is written) speaks of meeting someone, presumably a lover, in the early hours of the morning, watching the storm brew from the "stone circles" of the castle's ruins.
As for Dark Ages, that has grown to be among my favourites on here. I can assure you that one has excellent lyrics too ;)

Great album, although I agree that Heavy Horses and Songs from the Wood are better. The latter is just exquisite
|

The former is 'exquisiter' ;)

And I'd still say that Thick as a Brick is their most exquisite :D

Fair, but Heavy Horses holds the title of most exquisite for me.
