Edit; Glad you appreciate it man.

Sure dude. I have to assume my role as the Sputniks prog rock authoritah.
(unanimously elected [by vote would be more accurate] on here last year)

Not too many users here apply to that, I'm afraid. I need to revisit this.

The best examples of Jazz fusion flirting with sympho prog would be Jean-Luc Ponty, Maneige, Planet X, Deus Ex Machinas (not to confuse with the metal act) Area, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Brand X. Here for UK, it's actually more like sympho prog flirting with a tint of jazz.
I think Jazz fusion is gaining more love on sputnik though. I don't cease to discover stuff, and it mainly occurs when I see a Liledman list on here or something. But so much music so little time, isn't it.

Always how it is, but there is enough time ahead just the same.
Mahavishnu's The Inner Mounting Flame is pretty spectacular, of course. As I have found myself it is a good bridge to jazzier things.

Yeah, I agree 100%. If memory serves well, I entered to the world of jazz by that door. Then I've been starting to investigate on anything McLaughlin did. It then led me to Chick Corea (another jazzman who flirts with prog), Weather Report, Miles Davis (I only know an album, shame) Herbie Hancock and a bunch of jazz superheroes. But tbh I for myself am hard to please when it comes to jazz. I'm not a big fan of old school jazz, traditional jazz and stuff. I prefer to take it injected with fusion in general, rock or funky and the likes. Progressive Jazz is a label that I like =]

It's the same for me, though I plan on checking out a bunch of the classic jazz records to see if it takes me anywhere. So far it's only been one each from Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Don't miss 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson' by Miles Davis. As for John Coltrane, I need some of his into my life.
I could see you liking Mike Stern, Al Di Meola, Yellow Jacket, Return to Forever, Bill Bruford (solo and Earthworks)...oh wait, they all flirt with fusion haha.
Try Vital Information (feat. Steve smith on drums)Pat Metheny, guitarist John Scofield, Oscar Peterson, a maestro pianist. Also Dave Brubeck - Take Five (that's a song, get its album)
I couldn't go on and on like Liledman does.
