What you're saying is that you don't gauge success off what you want to achieve, you gauge it on what you actually achieved.

^
Exactly!

And ya, I know people generally stick within genres, but I just love music so much in general, that I just can't help but compare things outside of genres. It's like choosing your favorite bands or something. I like Sufjan Stevens, but I also really like August Burns Red. Their music is totally different, but overall I like Sufjan Stevens more because I think the overall quality of his musicianship and lyrics bests that of August Burns Red, not to mention that I just enjoy it more. It seems weird comparing the two, but despite the differences in style, in the end, it's all music. I'm glad we could agree to disagree.

Well yeah, you like Sufjan more, but that doesn't mean he's necessarily better (arguably). The food comparison is actually a pretty good one. I like ice cream more than sausages, but it's completely unfair to directly compare the two. I think you're missing this point. Within the "broader spectrum" of things, I like music more than ice cream, but you cannot compare the two. You need to limit you "scale" of comparison to within the genre.

Well then I guess we'll just have to disagree.

because nobody except douches like music because they think the overall musicianship is better. that might be the reason why you like it - the better musicianship - but you dont like them better because you THINK about the better musicianship

basically processing the music intellectually and THEN deciding to like it isn't the same as listening to it, liking it, and then processing it intellectually to find out why

Well, not to be a "douche", but uh, musicianship is kind of an important part to music...

And I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter in which order you process and form opinions of songs. Either way, if you take time to form an opinion and not just say you like something just to like it (i.e sputnik fanboy bands like Converge) then that's what is important in my book.

This is what I, and I guess a lot of other people, do. I guess soundofsunsets is just different to the rest of us.

We can't imagine that she wrote this as a teenager. Fearless was her Country-pop opus album that I can't get over with. I listen to it a lot, a lot and a lot. While all she ever release these days was MIDnights or The Trashy Punchong Dead-partment
