I love that the hate for this review is coming from saying that I can hear Dillinger and ATD-I in this. I love ATD-I, but the line in question said 'mewling spawn of', I was more swinging at the legions of bands that have been influenced by them. ATD-I, Refused and the like were great, but just like say, Korn in nu-metal, they're at least partly responsible for a lot of generic crap under the faux post-hardcore labelled 'scene' that followed. These guys have elements of that generic crap. As for the young (mid-late 90's) Omar comment, well, fuck it, I'm hearing it even if no one else is. Maybe I'm just wrong.
As far as dissonant, spastic music goes, DEP are about as well known as it gets. If I'd made the comparison to some obscure noisecore band then it might be lost on a lot of people. Again, like ATD-I, DEP are a massively influential band, if you actually listen to the album it's not that much of a stretch to assume that maybe these guys are fans of Miss Machine. I never said they were as good/technical/talented/whatever.
OllieS: Cheers for the constructive criticism. I think you're right in that I exaggerate a bit on the quality of the clean vocals, I'll watch out for overdoing it in future reviews. I was actually pretty into Kiuas a couple years back, and the example you gave is spot on, but the specific keyboard/whatever example I gave was just an example itself. I was thinking more along the lines of how virtually every new metalcore/post-hardcore/deathcore/whatever-commercial-genre release is just an incremental increase; more or less breakdowns, more or less screaming, and the band/press/fans get a rager over how these minor changes are the band 'redefining' or whatever their sound. Reading it back, I probably could have been clearer with it, so again dude, cheers for pointing out the shitty bits, and I'll try and nail it next time.
