I have to disagree, I think that this is one of my least favorites from Borknagar. Nice review, though.

Thanks dude. I used to think this was one of their weakest albums too actually. It just really grew on me after a while.

What is your issue with this, Crysis? It's definitely catchier and less aggressive than older stuff and more instant than newer albums, but that's probably why it's my favorite.

Unrelated note: Did you guys know that Remembrance released a new album this year? I stumbled across it yesterday. Great funeral doom.

I really don't have a problem with the catchiness of the album, what really gets me are the vocals (somewhat bland) and the fact that I really can never remember anything that truly grabbed my attention, even right after I finish listening to the album.

I've heard of the new Remembrance album, but have yet to listen to it.

*notices how satisfying it is to say the band's name 2 times fast*

The vocals are my favorite part of this album. Not so much the harsh vocals, but the cleans are amazing.

To me, none of the Borknagar vocalists have been all that great. Garm was ok for the albums he played on, Simen is great on this but crap on the follow-up album, and the new guy is the least annoying but his whole sound is kind of sterile.

To be honest I would say Vortex is the worst that they've had and I still love his vocals on this album. I agree that they aren't too good on Quintessence.

yeah, that's basically what I was implying. Simen is good in small doses (like in Dimmu Borgir) but he has never been very good as the lead man (Arcturus is an even better example of Simen's short comings).

Yeah I completely agree with that. He is much better as a backing vocalist. His vocals on Arcturus' last album weren't all that great at all.

Also Willie thanks for the Solefald rec. I'm almost finished listening to it and it's looking like a 4.5. Gonna listen to the Malsain album next.

That album is pretty boring all-around, though.

edit: The Linear Scaffold? What did you think? That could always use a review too ;)

His cleans in Dimmu were very inconsistent for me. I don't really like his contributions aside from the cleans on Deathcult Armaggedon

Yeah, I'm not really sure where all the hype surrounding that guy came from.

Yeah dude The Linear Scaffold. It's really great. I like the creepy, almost church like sound the keyboards give off in a lot of the songs. And I might end up reviewing that after a few more listens haha.

Yeah, I'm not really sure where all the hype surrounding that guy came from.

Probably just from the fact that he was in one of the most well-known black metal bands.

Probably just because he's been in such highly acclaimed bands.

Honestly, if it weren't for Simen (Vortex), Quintessence would have been a pretty boring album. Most of the tracks only stand out because of his singing.

His vocals on Arcturus' last album weren't all that great at all.

Most seem to dislike that album for some reason but i thought it was great, along with Simen's vocals.

I don't really dislike it, it's just a lot weaker than the other Arcturus albums. And Quintessence is just boring in general and his vocals aren't as good as they are on here.

That would either be Empiricism or The Olden Domain, with this not far behind.

I'll look for them, then. I only bought Quintessence because "Revolt" is an awesome song

Yeah dude you can't really go wrong with either one of those albums. Empiricism would probably be a little easier to get into.
