You're luck it'ys you Veds (and that the review is well written) you're dangerously close to a neg here

This review reads like "the music is pretty awesome, but y'all fags insist it's classic and I don't agree so here's a 3.5" It's obviously slanted toward the Sputnik audience and isn't nearly as descriptive as most of you reviews. This seems more lackluster Sputnik shenanigans than actual review...js

...and as Bhoy has continuously pointed out Canyon Behind Her is not that good...bottom half of the album for sure

edit: I mean the debate about Gavin's vocals is soooooo tired...

if this review wasn't so well-written, i'd neg you back to the fuckin stone age out of spite.

that said, you presented your argument well. i think the vocals take some getting used to on this one (they did for me when i first listened). Gavin seems much more subdued on this record than their other ones and i think it makes songs like Sorry But It's Over much more powerful in a haunting way

Of all of the beloved sputnik records that I have never fully understood all of the classic ratings for, none have been quite as frustrating as dredg’s “El Cielo.” The band’s most acclaimed release has been described as “flawless,” “crafted beautifully in every aspect,” and “absolutely essential.” In actuality, the album is none of these things. In fact,

Honestly, you could have gotten rid of this entire section. It's really not necessary.

I agree strongly with this review. It's a good record but not an incredible one.

Yeah I see what you are saying here. Probably shouldn't have slanted it to the sputnik audience so much, but I didn't describe it as thoroughly basically because the other three reviews did.

I probably could have used something more creative for the intro. I need to work on eliminating unnecessary sentences.

This review was long overdue. Perfectly argumented, especially this:

Lead singer Gavin Hayes has a rather pedestrian and droning voice to say the least, that weighs the record down a great deal. Hayes does demonstrate some significant range, but overall does not utilize his vocals properly; never appearing tense or even angry. Hayes never lashes out or gives the listener the impression that he is fervent over his lyrics. What elevates his performance however, are the soaring harmonies that are featured in various points in the record.

It seems we agree pretty much completely, only I would have rec'd Same Ol' Road.

This should be the flagged review of this.

Also, I second that.

Such a good review, but I disagree with you on some things. On the one hand,I think that still it cant be compared to albums such as "wish you were here" or"In the Court...",-even time doesnt allow us to do so-,and it may doesnt have that inovational brilliance. On the other hand,it is an album that mostly provokes the listener to feel its music in a way thats very rare nowadays. The fact that too many listeners feel connected(including me) in a deep way with it,may stand out as a weak argument for some people, but El Cielo's brilliance is to be found in the majestical way of dredg's creational method to make soulful, small, haunting and catchy small songs.Surely some flaws can be revealed, but the way the album draws you is somewhat magical.

As for me,the way of judging el cielo is through subjectivity, and a review usually needs to be separeted from personal feelings,so your rating is absolutely justified.

THOUGH HALF OF ME IS GONE

THE LONESOME PART IS LEFT

I CANNOT FIND THE OTHER HALF

Funny that I find those particular lyrics to be exactly what makes this album somewhat pretentious.
