I liked this band in the days of summer of darkness, demon hunter and triptych, their latest efforts including this one is weak, no other word for it, Skillet and Killswitch Engage have been doing the same trend, sad.... good thing there are bands like mewithoutYou.

I think this album is phenomenal compared to past Demon Hunter attempts. I've always felt like their songs in the past go on way to fuckin' long that I start to lose interest. The songs on The World Is A Thorn however are not boring to me at all. They are just the perfect lengh. Clark's vocals are suberb in my opinion compared to previous efforts. Their past albums he always used this dry bark. On this release he's using using different vocal techniques with his screaming and growling. He still uses the bark for all the old Demon Hunter fans. This is the only Demon Hunter cd I liked enough to buy. And in their defense I think Lifewar wasn't a serious creative effort. I think it was meant to be more of a war chant (if you've ever been to a live show). But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Huge progression overall and I'm glad they don't spit Christianity in your face on every song. Even though I am one, I can't stand that shit.

I think this album is better then most people are saying. I don't think it's amazing but the songs are better musically. I also like the lyrics.

If you spend an entire year perfecting your vocals and they still sound like shit
I sincerely hope you are not referring to his cleans, because he has a phenomenal clean voice.

You've quoted me out of context. I have no issue with the vocals, or the band for that matter, I was simply rebutting the other guys crappy criticisms.

Yeah...for a Christian band 4.5. Most of these Christian bands suck now days. THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF GOOD ONES!!!!!! (Just so no one gets all pissed off!) But a lot of the ones I grew up listening to suck now. Compared to previous efforts this cd is awesome. And I guess no one on here lifts weights, but goddamn this album gets me pumped when I'm lifting. Plus their new guitarist Ryan is like a brother from another mother to me. I was in a band with his younger brother in Greensboro. And I played for his other band The Ascendicate filling in for another member. So I am gonna favor this a little more. But still, all that a side, a huge progression for the band.

Demon Hunter doesn't change much, do they? It's almost like they're content with releasing The Burning Red over and over again. But unlike THAT album, these songs are too short to really drive home any improvement all the way through. Driving Nails is SOOOOOO incredibly monotonous, and this is coming from a fan. It's like they're not even trying anymore.

so bland

@greatlakes996: No, it isn't that bad, but it also isn't all that great, either. DH has so much potential, but IMHO, they are too afraid to leave their comfort zone. They need to experiment with their sound. They release good music, but never great music.

I find this enjoyable but probably towards the bottom of their catalogue.

My only gripe is that Ryan can't growl. He simply CANNOT growl. I would love the music A LOT more if Christian Alvestam would replace him as vocalist. I say this because I heard that song "Just Breathe" and I realised just how weak Clark is in the growling department. I doubt I will ever see this happen in a million years, but I would love to see him or anyone else do dirty vox, while Clark does clean. "Driving Nails" and "Blood in the Tears" just didn't live up to "My Heartstrings Come Undone" and "Deteriorate". The two former tracks sound bland by comparison. DH sounds like they're running on empty, what saves this album from monotony altogether is the electronic texturing and guest vocalists. However, if you remove these elements, then there is little to love about DH. For example, "Tie This Around Your Neck" was not bad, but it was a minute too short. If all the songs were like "Descending Upon Us", I would simply LOVE this record. My point is this: DH needs to expand or [ironically] evolve before they become irrelevant.

Don't get me wrong, though. Although I have my criticisms, I still enjoy this album.

I actually really enjoyed this album. It's not their best, but they did lose 2 members from STGOH until now so cut them some slack. They've experimented with some new sounds too on this record that I liked.

Good review, if a tad jumbled. I originally gave this album a 2, but I've listened to it several times since and I gotta say it's actually pretty great. Much better than Storm was.

So far my least favorite DH album (besides their debut)
