album is the biggest grower of all time but once it gets into your head oh my god so good. every song is just incredible.

everything before All Hail West Texas is really hit and miss for me.

it's definitely easier to like Tallahassee, We Shall All Be Healed, or The Sunset Tree over this, but over time I feel that this one is more rewarding. Darnielle's top tier is just stacked though so I mean...

barca did you just hear this? this will grow on you. for me, it is probably the biggest grower of all time. I gave it a (weak) 3.5 when it came out, I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I wanted to like it so badly, but I kept coming back to it, and I didn't know why. Eventually I realized that nearly every song on this album is perfect, and that it flows together in a way no other folk album ever has.



Jaipur, The Coroner's Gambit, Scoth Grove, Family Happiness, Bluejays and Cardinals, There Will Be No Divorce, Insurance Fraud #2, Alphonse Mambo, and We Were Patriots (christ I just listed over half the album, and I was trying to be stingy) are all top-tier, jaw-on-the-floor, I-believe-in-god-and-his-name-is-John-Darnielle, type quality.
