I'd have to disagree, I felt like they built off of the foundation they laid in Gauze so well for Macabre. Bit less serious than Gauze, however. Berry, Audrey, and Rasetsukoku are so damn fun to jam to. And just because I never gave it a proper sit down and listen! Probably gonna do it sometime before when I see them. I know I heard Mushi, Jessica, and Pink Killer before but that's about it!

Gauze is a near prog masterpiece. But I don't like Macabre because Kyo really takes onboard that generic, cheesey J-rock vocalist style and stands on a lot of really great riffs. There is some classics on there, for sure, but definitely their weakest.

I really do like R to the Core (sorry, can't do the backwards 'r' on my tablet much). It's a short jam, but the track itself is to the point and the lyrics couldn't be more meaningful. Die did such a sweet job writing Drain Away.

I love the chorus to the remake of it, but always found the remake a little awkward in terms of composition.

I enjoy the original and 2011 renditions of that song equally, to be perfectly honest. The album version suits the absurdly beautiful nature of the MV, though, but that's just me.

Original rules. I really enjoy the updated version, but just wish the flow into the chorus was a little smoother.

what does gauze sound like? i've heard it's more alt rock

A few songs sound like alt rock, others are experimental and have some weird structures. It's an odd album, different from everything they've done. Give it a try.

bach read this, pretty much explains why it's the best thing they've done pre DSS. Album takes a few listens to warm up to but imo it shits on all their albums until Uroboros: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/65515/Dir-En-Grey-GAUZE/

Second favourite here, after Red [em]. It's beautiful live too, hoping to see it on the Mode of Vulgar disc coming out next year.
Hoping that's a typo too, Gonzo, hah.

Red [em] is an absolute tune. I remember learning it on bass back in the day; such a grooving track.

Tour04 DVD having Red [em] and Amber one after the other is the ultimate treat for this era.
