The riffs are pretty intense and I loved the piano passage.

I mean compared to Darkthrone yeah theyre average but you cant just compare and judge based on other albums. Also the way theyre employed really makes a difference, and for depressing bm these riffs are crushing/

I think the atmosphere is created thanks to the vocalist. This kind of vocals could be played on 1930s Japanese carnival pop and I'd still rate this 5/5, black metal music is overrated anyway.

most dsbm bands are lazy and just rest on their "laurels" which are weird dark sounding reverb effects on guitars while everything else plods along lifelessly. if dsbm bands were less lazy, it wouldn't suck as much.
