Great review. This is easily akerfeldt's best work, vocally. Opeth seems to have backed off the immense harmonies with the last two albums, which is one of the reasons i liked them in the first place. Deliverance is better.

Thank you. I agree. I've heard most of Opeth's work and Mike's voice was especially flawless here. He's easily one of the best metal vocalists. He can sing, scream, and growl all with perfection.

EDIT: I finished beautifying the review by fixing up all the side quotes. A couple of them looked a little sloppy, but now I can rest in peace. This Message Edited On 09.10.05

I know people with this album...I have heard The Grand Conjuration...the part where Mikael growls "THE EYES OF THE DEVIL" turns me to convulsing jelly

Gotta tell ya:

'Devil crack the earthly shelf'

should be 'shell' rather than shelf. I'm only pointing this out in order to be a bastard :D

Yeah.. a couple of your side quotes are innacurate. Other than that brilliant.

Thanks for pointing it out. I'll change the "shell" quote. Do you guys see any other mistakes? I still can't find the lyrics online and before I just went with what people submitted to metal archives before the release. If you see something wrong just let me know.

The Ghost Of Perdition lyrics read:

Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one

Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young."

I hope I don't sound condescending, just trying to help.

Not at all. I appreciate the help. I fixed it up - how does it look now?

Metal archives must have changed the lyrics they had, because that's where I got them before.

I brought this, and then about a week later brought Blackwater Park and Still Life.

They don't even come close to the majesty, depth and terrifying beauty of Ghost Reveries.

I only have one gripe with your review; umm how is The Grand Conjuration "brutal"? Yes, the growling is the most sadistic, wall shattering thing I've ever heard, but I think it's more of a show of atmospherics and dynamics. The medieval acoustics, lovely.

Best tracks are Reverie, Harlequin Forest and The Baying of the Hounds (best intro everrrr). By the way, has anyone else noticed on certain CD players how Reverie starts off counting down to Harlequin Forest?

I've just listened to this, it was pretty good, but with typical Opeth flaws: a bit unfocused and the songs are way too long.

I'd give it 3.5/5 for having good parts as well. This Message Edited On 09.22.05

Opeth has never really done anything truly "brutal", but the growling along with the instrumentation make for a very heavy, crushing atmosphere.

All I have heard from this album is "The Grand Conjuration" and from what I have heard it sounds great. Nice review, too. Keep up the good work.

This is my fav and IMO the best Opeth album. I'm torn between this one and Damnation.

This album has inspired me to look up past Opeth albums. So far I've realized how much I love Still Life and especially MAYH, but this is still my favorite Opeth album by far. They use something new and keep the music interesting at every turn. 'Tis wonderful.

For me, they'll never surpass Still Life. EVER.
