"The Great Misdirect" is really a good album. Thing is it impress you the first listens, then you find its weak spots. I can say it's not better than "Colors", although it improves on certain areas. The album is not as cohesive as their last, and the songs themselves, taken alone, are not that great. You could say that some parts on "Swim to the Moon" were just written to show off. Ok, you could same the same on "White Walls", but the impact was bigger.
For long time fans, the album doesn't bring a lot new to the table. For newbies, it can serve to a good introduction to the band. Overall, a good album. I agree with your rating. Definitely, not a contender for album of the year, if that matters.

Review made me chuckle a few times, and I wouldn't be surprised if Jesus had an Opeth shirt
