Good review.
However, I hate it when people stack a new album against an artist's greatest work. Pearl Jam will never match Ten, But here they come damn close.
Eddie Vedder is GOD.

Nice review, but I like VS the best, so saying this is the best since Ten is basically insulting everything PJ ever did. Where are the PJ fans? Anyways this is a lot better than their last which I never listen to.

I think you slightly miss the point with Pearl Jam. They have never wanted stardom, and often actively gone out of their way to get away from it. This is partly why they never released an album as instantly accessible as Ten. That is not to say that none of their albums compare. Indeed albums such as Vs, Vitalogy and even Pearl Jam all compare very well next to Ten, and are far more diverse. They remain one of, if not the biggest, cult bands in the world. Sure they may not chart highly (I speak in UK terms here) but they sold out the biggest indoor arena in the country in less than 10 minutes (The 18,000 capacity O2 arena). This is a feat many mainstream bands would struggle to do. So people talking of their 'irrelevance' I find very peculiar. Relevance to what? They still pull huge crowds, work tirelessly and cannot be bettered in terms of passion and commitment. They are testament to the value of having substance. It must be said that whilst Backspacer is a good album, full of fun rock songs, so far it hasnt felt like one of their best.

Acedrums, I agree with a lot of what you said. The whole thing with PJ suing Ticketmaster in the mid-90s for their ticket prices being too high says it all. As a fan I have enjoyed all of their records to this point, some obviously much more than others. Saying that the albums don't compare to Ten doesn't do them justice.

umad?
In another news... Billboard is predicting they'll get the #1 spot this week.
Pearl Jam is on course to nab its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in 13 years. Industry prognosticators suggest the band's new "Backspacer," released on Sunday, Sept. 20, could shift anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week's end. That sales figure should easily place it ahead of the competition on next week's Billboard 200 chart.
The new album -- its first not with a major label -- is sold exclusively in the United States through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam's Web site and independent retailers."

I'm liking a few songs from this. I started listening to Ten after hearing this.

I'm a big PJ fan but I don't think Ten is that great, at least compared to their other records. Vs. up to Yield are their strongest albums for me. I like them all, though, including this one.
What album would you recommend for someone who's only got Ten to go on to?
|

axeman get Vs. and Vitalogy

I still think Ten is the best though

Ten is their best. Vs just about equals the quality but lacks the instantly appreciable accessibility. That may be a plus for some, but not me

I assume that you use the term grunge loosely?

Yeah its hard to classify bands like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, or Soundgarden as grunge, seeing as how grunge itself is a hard-to-define genre. Grunge to me is more of a musical movement than a genre, as most bands under the grunge moniker sound pretty much nothing alike.

absoultely, Pearl Jam is probably the least grunge sounding of all the "grunge" bands. Soundgarden and AIC have much different sound. Most of them are great though.

Wow thanks for recommending those albums, Not for you is an incredible song.

Saw PJ last night. they were eppiic.... when they performed 'Betterman' the audience was singing along and it was so epic

No problem axeman. Try out their live bootlegs, thats how I got into the band. Shindip I'm jealous I haven't seen them now in 3 years. I don't think Eddie even sings in the verses anymore he just lets the crowd sing.
