Oh yeah

If you ever listen to CPIII, that one's a very hard one to grasp

The fuck, he has an actual album called Civilization Phase 3?

I thought you were making a pun about the video game!

No dude, it was something he was working on for ages and came out after he died.

Ars loathes that album last time I recall. He also doesn't like 200 Motels, which isn't bad, but not primo Zappa. Strictly Genteel from that album is top 10 Zappa tbh

Sounds interesting. I'll check after more Mothers of Invention/Zappa stuff.

Where to move on from here though...

Hot Rats (avoid 80s remix)

Uncle Meat (A V O I D 80s remix jesus christ, and skip the bonus tracks they tack on before King Kong)

Lumpy Gravy (the second version, the first is total garbage. Also make sure to get the original mix, and not the shit 80s remix of that version. Avoid all 80s remixes tbh)

Fillmore East - June 1971 (really love this lineup, got the perfect mix of musicianship and humor, plus it has a really great version of Peaches en Regalia ; if you care enough, download the version with Willie the Pimp (Part Two), as the CD releases omit it)

Zappa really shit the bed with the initial CD issues of his albums

Keep in mind though that Uncle Meat and especially Lumpy Gravy are among Zappa's most difficult works (although definitely worth the effort). Hot Rats and Fillmore East shouldn't be too bad though. Joe's Garage is also accessible-but-still-good.

But honestly, the best decision you can make is first check out Absolutely Free, because it's both super inventive and immediately enjoyable - probably the only such Zappa album (well, along with this one).

But Apostrophe and Joe's Garage and One Size Fits All all exist in the 70s

don't get me wrong there's a bunch of enjoyable work he did after the 60s but whether it was jazz rock or hard rock or prog he was doing it was all just that: enjoyable. He was obviously very good at it but I can't think of a single post-60s album of his that would make me go "wow! this is brilliant! i didn't think you could do that!" like absolutely free or we're only in it for the money make me.

I say ALA should check Joe's Garage next and then maybe Absolutely Free.

If he had some trouble with We're Only In It, he should avoid Lumpy Gravy for now.

Honestly if the only Zappa that makes you laugh is Flo and Eddie era stuff, than that's really unfortunate.

This is growing really hard on 3rd listen, will probably be a 5 after i'm done with this listen.

I absolutely love the part in Flower Punk where both the vocals come in, really punctuates the point of the album.

Flower Punk is sung to the tune of Hey Joe, which is a song that a lot of 60s psych bands would cover, most notably Jimi Hendrix : )

Zappa was subtly making fun of those bands for all covering the same song. :P

the absurdity of the material is far funnier than "lol dude she's a slut" and the million piss/shit jokes

and besides, Zappa was never funny.

Frippertronics, I really think you're just missing out on some of the smart, hidden jokes inside Zappa's lyricism. It happens I guess. What can I say, dudes a genius. It's hard to get some of his philosophical, highly intellectual and metaphorical humor.
